This is a “STUPID” tattoo

…But will he regret it? By Derick Allen at Skin Deep Tattoos at Winter Haven, FL.

Sorry, I do not have an answer right now to your “why” questions.

EDIT: I just got the following note to share:

He had been thinking of this tattoo for two years and finally did it… Derrick Allen at Skin Deep Tattoos here in Winterhaven, FL said — and I quote — “if you’re stupid enough to do that, I will do it for free”, and then it was all done. There were thirteen people in the booth with camera phones, digital cameras… it was crazy! People were calling friends saying “dude, you won’t believe this…” It was the best… he has more crazy facial and head tattoos coming including “something” down the side of his nose and a bullet hole on the back of his head. Everywhere we go people try washing it off, and take pictures with their phones to send to friends! It’s great!

Anyway, I posted loads of stuff today here so don’t be mad if I take tomorrow off (from ModBlog). That said, I’m working on adding some guest bloggers here, so maybe there’ll be posts other than my bursts of rambling and random pictures soon.

  1. Well, should anyone reading this entry want a tattoo done by someone who will do anything, I guess Derick Allen is your guy.

  5. Why bother? I mean did he really need a tattoo to say that he was stupid? I’m pretty sure that he wears personality on his sleeve and I agree with yttrx

  13. This is bad; I agree with free speech and being able to express yourself, but seeing STUPID on your forehead every single day can’t be good for one’s self esteem (or getting a job, or starting new relationships, or getting people to respect you). I would think that after a couple years you’d start believing it and feeling down about it.

  17. i kind of find it weird that no one will even bring up the debate that, say, tattooing your whole body black could be stupid*, but they’ll immediately look at this guy and be like “well, obviously he is stupid.” kind of a double standard to me.

    * i have a great deal of respect for lucky diamond rich, and would admittedly prefer to hang out with him in public than a guy who has the word “stupid” tattooed on his forehead.

  21. Aparently no one can imagine that the guy could be dedicated to humorous irony, rather than having low self-esteem. Maybe he looks at himself every day in the mirror, laughing, and then goes to work teaching PHD candidates.

You all know you’d find it kick-ass if a professor walked in with ‘STUPID’ tattoo’d on his forehead and started lecturing on metaphysical body/mind association issues (or, hell, even basic algebra).

  25. there is a kid here in houston who has been walking around with “stupid” backwards across his forehead for YEARS.

so this guy should get “unoriginal” right underneath it.

    it might also be fake.

  29. He’s just asking for trouble getting that tattooed on his forehead. It’d be as clever as getting “dumb” tattooed on his ass.

I will lay down one hundred dollars in cash right now that the fellow with “STUPID” tattooed on his forehead in the pictures above does not teach PhD candidates, and another 100 dollars in cash right now that he never, ever will.

  41. yttrx – the point is that no one here (unless, of course, they know the person) has any idea about this man’s life.

We’re all just making assumptions and judgements based on a tattoo.

  45. I am with MajikMan as well.
Yttrx: I don’t know what this person does for a living, but I think that the essence of what MajikMan said is that we shouldn’t be too hasty to judge people (and their intelligence) based on their personal choices of body modifications.

Ariel: no, it doesn’t really speak for itself. A tattoo might indicate how a person feels, sees himself or even as Majikman said, tell us something about his sense of humour. Try to judge a person’s intelligence by his appearence or his tats and you’ll find yourself terribly misguided (and to do so won’t make you a very nice person either…)

Kaitlin: You might be right, it might make it tough for this person to get a job or gain the respect of other people, but hey, isn’t that a challenge we’re all (or at least those of us with visible/controversial mods) facing in the body modification community?

Sorry for the long rant, but as a lot of people point out every now and again in this blog, shouldn’t we of all people be a little less judgemental?

PS. Both my arms and my chest are covered in tattoos. My right arm is sporting a Care Bear sleeve. Doesn’t help with winning me much respect, i know, but my goal is to be a university lecturer. And I can bet anyone I will be.

  53. yttrx, you’e probably right. But that’s no the point.
The point is that we, the pierced, tattooed and the just plain old freaks, should not judge a person by a tat on his forehead.
If we do that, we lose the privilege to whine about being not understood and persecuted by the public for the way we look.

  61. We may never know that person personally to know why he opted to have that tattooed on his forehead– however, it was a choice he made (just like all of us who have a tattoo) and so, I say “more power to him”. If that tattoo makes his feel happy, then that is all the reason needed: he does not (nor should he)need to justify his new tattoo.

  65. I’d have to agree with choice advocates. Sure, it’s not the bet idea in MY mind for a tattoo… but then for all reality… what is? I saw a woman two days ago with the three names tattooed on her arm that looked like she tattooed it herself on her primary arm with her secondary hand. I think it looks rediculous, but honestly, I just can’t really judge it.

And *I* am one judgmental bastard.

If this guy is a jokester… well, more power to him for taking it to the next level.

  69. I feel absolutely comfortable judging anyone based on their appearance–and so should everyone else. I realize there are a lot of hippies walking around who have the whole “omg we must be tolerant and accepting of everyone and everything” thing going on, and quite honestly that’s just lame.

A person who gets “STUPID” tattooed on their forehead has made it exceedingly clear how they feel about gainful employment, for example. If this person is not financially solvent, it is further obvious that they’re looking for a free ride while they get to be all freaky.

However, maybe it was just something ironic, like doing it to win a bet. In any case, I cannot think of likely situation surrounding this tattoo wherein he would be the sort of fellow I’d like to meet at all, let alone get to know.

  73. And by the way rusty—I’ve never once whined about not being understood and persecuted by the public for the way I’ve EVER looked. Every tattoo, every piercing, every fucked up hair thing I had going on, every pair of leather pants and paratrooper boots–all of it was a conscious, rational decision carefully weighed by me. I knew people would give me some shit, and they did. And I didn’t care.

The sort of person who cares what other people think about what they look like is the last sort of person who should be modifying their body.

  81. I wonder if this might jsut be a funny sep in the process of somehting more. I know if i was getting some sort of black work or full coverage tatoo i might be silly enough to tattoo a few things on me, take a picture, then later tattoo over it with my itended design…

either way, his body, good luck to him.

He gets points for making me laugh on what was otherwise a pretty crappy day, though. More power to him.

  93. In any case, I cannot think of likely situation surrounding this tattoo wherein he would be the sort of fellow I’d like to meet at all, let alone get to know.

the good thing about being modded is that it really does sort the wheat from the chaff. It saves dissappointment because the ones that are not worth knowing are put off by your appearance in the first instance. I see it as a filter.

  109. For all of you who are getting your knickers in a knot about someone judging this guy, I present another way to thinking about being judgemental. It is human nature to form opinions about someone when we see them, that is why everyone says first impressions are so important. What really matters though, is what we do with these opinions and judgements. If you take your negative opinions and stop there, then, in my opinion, you are being intolerant. You are letting an uninformed first impression take over your total thoughts about a person. And thats not fair to anyone, including yourself. If you let these things rule you, you will miss out on having some amazing friends.

you all need to relax… is it harming you personally in any way shape or form that this man has gotten STUPID tattood on his forehead? i sincerely doubt it unless you told yourself that youd harm yourself if you ever saw STUPID tattood on someone’s head.

get over it… he is doing what feels right for him… he thought about the tattoo for 2 years, obviously weighed the concequences of his actions, and decided that this was what he wanted to do. why judge him?

  121. Yttrx: I think it is a bit unfair to assume that just because someone has chosen an unconventional appearance he is not interested in gainful employment and is looking for a free ride. You might be right about some people, but I am sure this is not always the case. I work really hard to compensate for my appearance (visible tats and branding)and the doubts and prejudice it tends to generate among people, teachers, employers etc. By being hard-working, motivated and reliable I think I have managed to make a lot of people overlook my appearance for the sake of my skills. I am sure that the same goes for other people in the bod mod community. I just refuse to believe that everyone I see on BME with visible mods is just a hippy looking for a free ride.

  129. I would like to know why he chose the word “STUPID”. I mean, is that his nickname, or is it a joke based on the phrase “STUPID HEAD”? I don’t know, I mean there’s gotta be some secret hidden meaning behind it or something (at least one would assume). I have to say this is probably the most unique tattoo I have ever seen. Gotta give him points for originality.

There is a very large difference in having the WORD “stupid” written across your forehead and having facial ink in general.

Being in a specialized field and making $100,000+ salary is not unheard of when being visibly modified. However, unless this guy is 100% home based. I wish him all the luck in the world.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

  145. For myself I think it’s a form reflexion as Magritte :
a famous painting is called “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” or “It is not a pipe”, and on this painting you could see a pipe. you can see a pipe but it’s not the object but a representation of this object.
(http://membres.lycos.fr/reno3000/magrittegalerie.html => to see “ceci n’est pas une pipe”)
so could we make the analogy with it ? I think so…

  149. I didn’t know getting a tattoo was to be a choice made by society. I thought that getting a body modification was the exact opposite of that, you making a personal choice. While you may not like another person’s choice in modifications, I think it would be easier if we all supported one another instead of poking fun at them in a public internet forum. All of us with modifications have chosen to be different for personal reasons. We choose our modifications based on our personal likes/dislikes. Those of us with highly visible modifications that are generally considered different/strange have to work harder for the rest of society to accept this and this is a path he has obviously chosen. We know that some people will judge us harshly, but we also doing this knowing that this can happen and that we might experience some backlash because of it. I applaud anyone with the nerve to wear their life on their sleeve through tattoos/piercings/brandings/etc. Those are the people with real power because they do it regardless of what others might think. These are people who lack fear of what society might think about them, and I think that the rest of the world can learn something from it.

  153. The sort of person who cares what other people think about what they look like is the last sort of person who should be modifying their body.

I totally agree with that, but it’s also a waste of energy to post philosophical rants about it either way on the Internet.

  165. this tattoo reminds me of that really awful dvd bumfights, where these college kids give a homeless man beer and some money to tattoo “bumfight” on his forehead.
granted i’m sure this guy didn’t get this tattoo for a handful of cash and a 6 pack, but me personally, i don’t think it’s that funny.

  169. I’m not sure that it’s crooked; none of the pictures shows a 100% frontal view, so I think that it might be a perspective issue. To me it looks pretty straight. If you draw an imagianary line up his nose and follow that curve of his forehead, the line would pass directly between the ‘U’ and the ‘P’.

  177. I can be judgmental too, yet there is something familiar and ironic about all the questions it raises: Do you think you can get a job looking like that? Do you think anyone will love you or respect you looking like that? Did you lose a bet? Do you have any self-respect? etc. They all sound like a conservative society’s arguments against anyone with visible mods of any kind. We can all make assumptions, but if he thought about it for two years then he must have considered the some of the ramifications and questions he’ll endure. Or, he could just want his 15 minutes of notoriety before the novelty wears off. It’s not 100% unique but few people would dare copy it and it definitely gets attention.

As the note said, “Everywhere we go people try washing it off, and take pictures with their phones to send to friends! It’s great!” That novelty is arguably a dumb reason, but I don’t think it reflects on anyone else’s motives for getting tattooed. I don’t see why some people are upset by it. It’s his forehead, his choice. As for the homeless man with the “bumfights” tattoo, that is upsetting. It’s totally reprehensible. Did a professional tattoo artist do that? I see that more as gross exploitation rather than novelty and it makes me very sad.

If he ever wanted to cover it up all he would have to do is grow his hair out a few inches and comb it forward. – JoeThere’s also makeup he could wear. He’d look gay, but his tattoo wouldn’t be visible 🙂

  185. I disagree with all the people saying that this guy will never get a job again. Not all businesses are uptight, and you can be sure that this guy will be hired, if he puts in a good effort, by some company who values those with an odd sense of humour.

That, or maybe he already has a job where they don’t mind? There ARE some jobs, like over-the-phone tech support, where you can sport any mods and still work for decent money.

Please remember, everyone, that you are not getting this guy’s life story just from the pictures and the snippet of information here. Don’t just assume you know everything.

And yttrx, why is being tolerant of everyone lame? Do explain, as you’ve given no good reason with your argument.

  201. Adam: Just as an aside, sociopaths don’t care what other people think about ‘em. That’s why they are so dangerous. My younger brother is a bona fide sociopath, and he’s fuckin’ scary because he’ll do whatever he wants, anytime he wants, as long as he doesn’t think he’ll immediately get in more trouble than he can handle.
This has been an elightening, and rather depressing debate. I’ve seen tattoos that are well done, tattoos that are poorly done, and tattoos that crossed every possible boundary of poor taste, and I’ve never read such comments as I have for this one. Assuming that the people that read ModBlog are primarily people who like bodyart in it various forms, it’s a sad commentary that there are so many people here who are willing to judge so harshly with no more information than a short paragraph and four photos. It leaves me with a distinct feeling of weariness with the world in general.

That said, these were nice high res shots (although not all clear), and nothing looked that abnormal to me… So if it’s a fake (which I certainly concede it could be), it’s much better done than most of the ones people try and slip by Phil and I.

Judging by appearance is the root cause of racism and most of the other irrational prejudices against other humans Anyway why should we let boring bastards rule our lives, so called “good jobs” aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. For a start they stop you having a life ( this comes from a 53 year old who looked into the career abyss and backed away rapidly)

  269. personally, i wouldn’t do it, but he seems to be happy with it. i would be interested to hear his reasoning behind it….

and while employers are not supposed to hire/fire you based on appearances, they CAN tell you to cover up your tattoos/take out your piercings to comply with a dress code. so i guess if this guy wants a bigtime job, he’ll have to buy some dermablend.

  277. Zog.. How can you be so sure he’ll regret it, just because you would, doesn’t mean he would.

As for a job? Just because he has a facial tattoo, one saying stupid no less, doesn’t mean he can’t get a job. Maybe working in a public job would be out the window, but that still leaves thousands of options.

  289. god for a tattooed and pierced community alot of you seem to be very narrow minded this guy may regret this tattoo down the line he may not but that is the same with all tattoo’s the fact that he has had the idea for it for 2 years says something. i think that if i had a choice between employing someone with “stupid” tattooed on there head and someone with a necklace of severed penises tattooed around there neck (and yes i’ve seen it in a published article) i know who i’d choose. as a tattoo novice i am surprised by alot of the reactions you some of you guys have had. why not just see it for what it is. A JOKE.

  293. His forehead, he can do what he wants.

On the other hand, the artist concerns me. If the client was not in his right mind in some way… drugged, mentally ill, whatever… the artist is responsible for indulging his desire and changing his life forever.

So, for me, the real question is, what sort of screening process did the artist use? If the client was a personal friend of his, and the artist knew he was not crazy or whatever, then fine. But if this was a walk-in job… well, not so good.

On yet another hand, if the shop is hiring, then I think the whole thing was great and I’ll send a portfolio. I like Winter Haven. lol

  317. I have to say, I’m shocked and disappointed with what I’m seeing here…

Why do we have to argue and criticize? In a community that calls themselves so SO incredibly fucking open-minded, we’re letting a guy with “stupid” tattooed across his forehead tear us apart? Just because you can’t agree on whether or not it’s just a dumbass idea? How about we shut the fuck up with the arguing, call the guy in 5 years and find out what HE thinks… I mean, if you really care THAT much. It’s his life, his forehead, his choice. If I want to get “arm” tattooed on both arms, “leg” tattooed on both legs, etc. who’s to tell me that I’ll regret it in 10 years when I realize I never needed to label my own body parts? You think that’d stop me? Would it stop you? Doubt it.

And really, who gives a fuck why this guy did it? I just hope he’s happy with it for the rest of his life, I really do, as I do when any friend gets a tattoo. Hell, if I had a “REJECTED” rubber stamp, I might consider stamping my forehead before going out in public on occasion so people can clearly see that I realize they think I’m a freak. How’s this any different?

At least he’s smart enough to -not- feel the need to defend himself against closed-minded assholes.

  333. I like it, personally. Also, I find it funny that I’m going to be the 130′th comment about this one guy’s one tattoo. I think that’s the point of the tattoo, to make people talk and stare. He may not be the kind of person who’s desperate for attention, but really, a lot of people (like most of the people who visit this site) get tattoos and piercings to stand out.

    Just my opinion.

But I think it makes sense.
