White Ink on Dark Skin

It’s still fresh, so hopefully I’ll publish a healed photo of these wings in the future, but I sure like the way that this white ink tattoo looks on the dark skin, done by Jan at Black Peppa in Johannesburg, South Africa. I’d love to go back to South Africa… I missed out on Capetown last time I was there…

  1. It’s great, but I would really want to see it when it’s all healed, because white doesn’t normally heal that great on darker skin. I really want to see it healed. It is beautiful though.

  3. What a beautifully simple design. So elegant, yet very large and ‘light’. I bet it would work even if the ink fades-it would just become more subtle. lovely.

  5. Even if the white darkens, these are simple enough to make gorgeous work regardless of the colour!

  7. It’s nice to see some work coming out of South Africa. I was there a few months ago but I didn’t have the time to find a decent shop (the one I used to go to closed down).

I never really saw a huge number of people with visible tattoo’s either.

  9. It’s weird, I was just discussing what this would look like the other day with some friends…

Well, thanks for answering my queries!

  13. The white ink on dark skin just makes that design pop. It’s so pretty and clean looking.

whenever I see SA it’s usually Jo’burg or Cape Town…does anyone know of places in Natal?…I didn’t take to the place my cousin used (not that I’m back there yet, just scouting around :P)

  17. My artist in Benoni (Jhb) is awesome. I’ve had all my tattoos done there. #20.. If you want to see a lot of people with visible tattoos you need to know where to go. There’s still a lot of closeminded people here. Especially older white people just do not approve of anyone that is modified in any way. You can’t get a decent job if you have visible tatoos. All my stuff is on my legs, and I never wear short skirts or anything like that to work.

  19. 13. i think it’s alright.. more of a ‘scar-like effect’ in the future instead.. not ‘tobacco’ stain.

  21. #27 That’s what I’ve been worried about. I want to do a very specific job (with children) and I’ve been planning all my tatts to be easily hidden, but still show them off later 😛

  31. AT LAST!!! i’ve been searching for examples of white ink on dark skin because i’ve been interested in getting some white work. i’ve had several artists tell me it wouldn’t take well. i knew they were wrong.

this looks stellar. can’t wait to see the healed pics.

  33. hmm. well, i’m light brown and the white in my tattoo completely disappeared… hopefully this all-white tattoo doesn’t do the same.

  37. I wish it would stay like that, or else I’d be all over that. It’d be interesting to see some follow up pics

  39. i’ve got olive skin and white ink tends to yellow on me– even bright colors tend to look a little faded under the melanin in my skin. it will be interesting to see whether any of this tattoo even shows through after things are healed.

  41. This tattoo looks great now.. because you are seeing the ink that is on top of the skin/in the open skin.. once this heals the dark skin loaded with melanin will be over the top of it, making it all but invisible.. this wont be a very noticeable tattoo, if it is even visible at all.

  43. Thanks for that! It’s great to see white ink on dark skin and the tattoo does look great. Now what would be really great would be more pics like these and the healed pics of this tattoo and some pics of the tattoo say after a while (e.g. a year?).

  45. Awesome Tattoo, I love white ink. Unfortunately I’m too ‘white’ for white ink to make an impression. And !WooHoo! – I live 2 blocks away from Black Peppa!!! Pity I haven’t cash to spend there though, they have some wicked clothes too…

  47. Great image!! Been looking for an example of this! Interested in knowing how difficult it is to get a “uniform” level of color using white ink.

  49. I realize this is old…but I have a lovely Nigerian friend with *extensive* white line-work….and she’s had it for three years. It is about as bright today as when she had it done. It depends on your skin, everyone is different. I feel all the comments about how it will certainly fail are over-generalizing.

  51. LillyTree, would your friend mind posting pics of her tattoo? I’d love to get white ink as I’m dark skinned, but obviously want to know what it’ll look like after a few years. Thanks.

  53. Would love to see the the three year photo #60. One of the reasons why I do not have a tattoo is b/c I feel it will not be visible on my skin. Many thanks.

  55. So! Did it take? I want to get stuff like this, but I don’t want dark green tattoos. 🙁
