As is likely well known around these parts, ModBlog has a proud tradition of tattoos celebrating both the work and many faces of Salvador Dali. This is a tradition we would like to continue, and, hey, we like to think that this handsome portrait of the man by the shit-kicking Nikko Hurtado at Ignition Tattoo in Hesperia, California, is a fine addition to an already impressive canon. “But Jordan,” you ask, “what kind of man wears such a fine portrait of such a gleefully mad artist?” All your questions will be answered after the jump.

My my, how cultured we are this evening! First Dali, and now this poem by Edgar Allen Poe, “From Childhood’s Hour,” as worn by SeamlessKameleon. I think in big text pieces like this, the letters should either be identical or look like neat, natural writing; this falls nicely in the latter category for me.

The last time we featured a tattoo involving Dali on ModBlog, it got picked up by such varied places as Boing Boing, the official Star Wars site, and the personal blog of a Playboy magazine editor. I only mention this because, as excellent as toserveman’s Dali portrait tattoo is, a precedent has been set, and I will not be satisfied unless it is linked to by NASA, the official web site of the Italian federal legislature and a talking gorilla’s Tumblr page. You’re all on notice.

So, the week has come and gone. In case you missed it:

More scheduling conflicts, but I swear we’ve got at least one podcast coming up very soon, as well as another roundtable, more video … it’s a regular goddamn multimedia wonderland around here. That aside, we’ll be here over the weekend as per usual. Before I sign off for the night, I just want to mention that, while I rarely don’t allow comments through, I have no problem keeping something in moderation if it meets certain levels of vulgarity or off-topic-ness. So, you want a tattoo celebrating one of your favorite movies, but one that alludes to other artists as well? What to do?

I really wanted a Star Wars tribute tattoo, and my artist really wanted to do one. I didn’t want anything overused or anything, like the insignia or a lightsaber, and I didn’t want a huge scene with ships and everything, so we decided to kind of create something. I liked the shape of the AT-AT walkers, but they were kind of beefy. I was thinking I wanted something more slender, like a Dali elephant, and here it is! I’m so happy with how it turned out, and I’m really glad to have something completely original on my body.
