Jester Complete Concept Transformation

One of the most interesting group of people in the body modification world is the small group of at most one or two dozen people undertaking a “concept” transformation — the best known perhaps are those that are performers and exhibit themselves to the world, such as The Lizardman or The Enigma and Katzen. Other like Tom the Leopardman or Stalking Cat Dennis Avner live more reclusive lives, and there are a few inbetween like Eva Medusa. I want to introduce you to another character that’s setting out on this journey, Jester Mayhone, who you can follow on Facebook at facebook.com/JestertheJesterspage. As his name makes obvious, he has set about not just covering himself in clown and jester-themed artwork, but also tattooing himself permanently as a jester in full makeup and costume — I can’t help but be reminded of a “secret society” of street clowns, all tattooed with permanent clown makeup, that I came in contact with via a friend that was riding the rails. In any case, Jester has taken the big step of applying the permanent jester makeup to his face, so I think it’s time to introduce him to the public properly — here is his portrait, and below it you can learn much more about him.

Jester told me, “I think my love for jesters and clowns started when I was a child — I was always amazed by anything related to them. To me, being a jester and being that jack of all trades character has also had a very deep meaning, because I felt that they could express every emotion felt — or rather anything going on — more than anyone else could. It’s the main reason that when I started painting I used the jester as a subject, using the character to express my own, and everything I felt and thought. It seemed like the best way to convey the world around me. I have always been the one joking around, making people laugh, doing crazy things and speaking my mind, without any fear of what people did or thought. I have always been me and made no apologizes for it, regardless of if I was too “out there”, too loud, too goofy, or just too blunt for some people.”

“In old times with kings and the like, jesters were able express something to the king when no one else could. I always thought that was fantastic. So with that in mind, when I first started drawing and painting the Jester to express my thoughts or views, this became my Abstract Jester Series, a series of hand drawings, digital art, and paintings that I continue to paint even now. In fact. right now I am slowly working on re-creating many pieces of art from our history through this series, adding jesters to paintings like ‘The Scream’, and ‘The Last Supper’.”

“I have probably created a few thousand abstract jester images and so the idea of tattooing myself into a jester was something that happened naturally. I was already using them to express myself, what I saw around me, and the views I had. Not to mention my love of the character itself. In fact, my first tattoo was a simple jester, and than I got more and more jester-related tattoos until I decided that the jester should be my theme — to transform my whole body into a modified jester through tattoos. It was already part of me, so it made sense — to represent myself with the very character I love and was already communicating through in my art.”

“I try to put great thought into what I get and usually sit on a design for a while, like with my jester face make-up tattoo. I applied many rough drafts, with make-up, over and over again, to make sure it was perfect for me and my facial structure. As for where I get tattooed, I’ve been going to the same guys at Tomah Tattoo in Tomah, Wisconsin for the last thirteen years. The three tattooists, who all have pieces they work on for me, are Steve May, Dave Fox, and Clay Fox. They are three fantastic artists, which is why I don’t go anywhere else. I have the rest of my tattoos, except for maybe one or two, planned out with the three of them.”

I’ve been watching Jester online for some time, and I was struck how he’s always drawing on himself with marker, constantly fantasizing about who he will become and imagining it as real. To give you a better idea of where he’s going with his skin, I’d like to share a recent mock-up. One of the complications he has — as many people who start concept transformations after being interested in tattoos for some time — is that he’s already got a spotty assortment of miscellaneous tattoos complicating large-scale work. However, once the patchwork Jester’s suit is added, it pulls together successfully.

Finally, as he mentioned, Jester is also an outsider artist, creating bizarre paintings that suit his Jester persona perfectly — I wanted to finish up this post by sharing a small selection of his creations. Zoom in for a closer look, or, better yet, take a look at his galleries. Again, you can find him and follow him on Facebook at facebook.com/JestertheJesterspage.

The Three Mod Amigos

My friend Emilio Gonzalez as well as old BME friend Matt Gone (interviewed by The Lizardman back in 2003) and also Mary Jose Cristerna are down at the Costa Rica convention to promote it, and are doing lots of television interviews while there. I’m sure the media are thrilled to have three superstars of body modification all in one place at once. And doesn’t Emilio just dwarf Matt? His head looks about twice as large, as I’ve said before, I suspect that that Emilio is not fully human — some sort of tattooed alien werebear creature I think.

Fifteen Years of Tongue Splitting!

I was recently reminded that tongue splits are now in their 15th year. Here’s my tongue split, done (according to the time stamp on the photos), August 13th, 1997, which was the 4th known tongue split if memory serves. A guy in Italy was done by his dentist in 1996/1997, and then Erik Sprague/The Lizardman tracked down a doctor in Albany and was the first to get the procedure done by him using an argon Laser. I was (I believe) the third — Tom Brazda took these pictures when he came to visit me in Philly. It is The Lizardman who I credit with having launched this movement, even though he was technically not the “first”. After me I believe the doctor did about ten more people (Erik would know better as he referred many of them) and then stopped when the media attention started and he got worried about losing his license. At about the same time, although not as publicly, Dustin, split her own tongue slowly using the tie-off method. This procedure was slow and painful, and most people who attempted it gave up before finishing. Things moved very slowly over the next year, with a few people quietly attempting different procedures — for example, Tim Cridland (the Torture King) gave himself a short split by scalpelling back bit by bit, as the initial Italian mod enthusiast had done.

After that, “renegade practitioners” started testing the waters, for example Todd Bertrang did the procedure with a scalpel and Patrick Bartholomew doing it with his cautery tool, proving it could be done by a bodmod practitioner outside of a doctor’s office, and then Pandora’s box was open. BME’s tongue splitting gallery, which is dated and the most comprehensive history anywhere on this subject, show only a tiny number of tongue splits in 1998. But then more in 1999, and in 2000 the procedure was spreading quickly with more and more practitioners adding it to their repetoire as experience proved that you weren’t going to kill your clients! By 2001, virtually every single BME update saw new tongue splitting pictures added to the galleries.

As of when I write this post, I believe there are six or seven people who can claim to be in the “15 year club” — that said, you never know what went on behind closed doors, unpublished. By the end of the year that number is at most twenty, and I doubt it’s even that high. But by the end of 2000? The number starting to roll in is HUGE, and tongue splitting has come of age. And maybe most importantly, of all body modifications, tongue splits are one of the only where I don’t think I’ve ever heard a single regret.

Challenge Accepted!

The gang over at Hooklife have thrown down the gauntlet to suspension teams around the world.  Today they announced a guerrilla suspension challenge.  Here’s some of the details:

We are challenging the suspension community to dream up, create, produce and photograph the most amazing Guerrilla Suspension.  Before anyone goes crazy we need to make one thing very clear.  Hook Life, suspension.org and our affiliates DO NOT condone any illegal or dangerous activities! Now with that said here’s how it will work.

Please submit ONE photo.  You can submit as many different entries as you like, but please only one per suspension/location.  By submitting a photo you are giving suspension.org and Hook Life permission to use the photo on this site and possibly on other sites to promote this competition.

Photos will be judged and scored accordingly:

  • 20% – Location – Based on visual appeal, complexity and higher public visibility
  • 20% – Suspension – More complex suspensions gain higher marks
  • 20% – Photography – Image quality and getting the perfect shot is part of the challenge
  • 40% – Creativity – Overall score based on judges opinions
  • Safety – Unsafe rigging and/or dangerous suspension practices will have points deducted

Grand Prize – A one of a kind “trophy” rig designed and donated by Skin Mechanics Steelworks.  The grand prize will be awarded at the 2012 Dallas Suscon.
Other Prizes – As the competition progresses we may adding more prizes.  Companies/Individuals interesting in donating prizes please contact Hook Life.

Judges:

  • Allen Falkner – Administrator of suspension.org
  • Misty “Southtownbaby” Forsberg – Head Writer for Hook Life
  • Mark “nakedlens.org” Kaplan – Official Dallas Suscon Photographer
  • Stewart “S2B” Stephens – Certified Entertainment Production Rigger
  • Erik “Lizardman” Sprague – International Performer

Submissions will be accepted until December 31st, 2011.  After that date the judges top picks will be posted.  Good luck everyone.  We are looking forward to seeing your entries.

The full details as well as the contest entry form can be found at this link.

Now remember, only entries submitted to HookLife will be counted.  That said, knowing some of the fantastic suspension teams that are out there, there are going to be more than one photo of each suspension.  BME is inviting those teams that participate to submit any additional photos to the suspension galleries.  I’m going to be keeping my eye out for these submissions over the next couple of months, and I’m hoping to feature as many as possible.  So if you plan on entering the challenge, remember to send your extra photos to BME, and send me an e-mail with the story behind them (don’t e-mail me your photos).

While we’re on the subject of suspension, here’s my counterpart at HookLife, Misty, doing a tandem 6pt resurrection, 4pt rebirth suspension.  Misty is the one on top.

Jenya is no stranger to Modblog. In fact long term readers have watched him evolve into the modern modded man he is today. Fortunately, he was nice enough to chat with me on Skype a while back to answer some questions about him and his mods. His native tongue is Russian, so I had to clean up the grammar on his answers a bit to make it easily understandable, but I did my best not to change the context whatsoever.

For the interview and a few pictures documenting his evolution, keep on keeping on.

Sean Philips: So why don’t you give me some basic info to start; age, sexual preference, location and career.

Jenya: My name is Jenya. I am russian, 23 year old on the 28 january will be 24 years old. I am heterosexual. I was born in and live in Perm city, but I to want live in St. Petersburg and  in the spring I’m going to leave this city (Perm). I make teflon body jewelry (in white, black and blue colors).
Sean Philips: Wow, only 23, you have quite the collections of body mods for such a young guy. How did you get started on that path?
Jenya: I was 18 when I pierced my lobes for their further stretching.

mail-22

Sean Philips: So right off the bat you knew you wanted stretched lobes, what lead to that decision?

Jenya: In the past I have seen many pictures on BMEzine. I was delighted by such body modification and I really wanted to do the same. I wanted something  that I could see in real life when I looked  in the mirror and something I could experience for myself.
Sean Philips: Very cool. So what inspired you to start stretching your lip piercing for the lip plate?
Jenya: I saw it on BMEzine as well. I saw it on a few IAM members; Raur,  pharmacist and some other people as well. I really wanted to try it. I like how it looks, but when I increased the size of the hole in my lip, then I wanted more and more. My motivation came primarily from MobyK. He helped me to understand that the more – the better. When I saw pictures of different tribes people with large lip plates I would wonder as to how much is practical? How do they eat, communicate, and  live with such large lips?  I wanted to find the answer to these questions within myself. Many of these questions I have since found answers to through the stages of my lip getting bigger. Now I’m wondering how it will be to have a  50mm or 100mm medusa and if I can live with a 200 x 100 mm lip plate.

mail-12

Jenya: Sorry for my english 🙂

Sean Philips: No problem it’s far better than my Russian.

Jenya: (hehe)
Sean Philips: So how is it living with the lip plate in your daily life?
Jenya: This is very interesting. Before I asked the same question, but now I can honestly  say I love eating with my big lips. This modification did not cause any inconvenience to my regular activities. I still eat, drink, sleep, talk. I also really love this big smile. When I smile looking in the mirror, it improves mood, I get a positive on the whole day! I have only positive thoughts. thereby I attract only good things in my way.
Sean Philips: That’s an awesome outlook, I like that a lot.  So you love your mods, but how does the general public deal with your mods, I am sure you get a lot of attention? Also, what about your family, do they support your choices?
Jenya: Yes, I get A LOT of attention. The reactions are  always different. When I am walking down the street with an open face, I notice some people’s  reaction. I often can hear the enthusiasm or hatred directed at me. I can see through to almost everyone. From how they treat me I can assume how they were brought up. I do love it when people like how I look. I give them my smile and they return a smile for me. I think it’s great. When I encounter  people who scream negative things at me, I do not pay attention to it, I move on. I think they are just uneducated people. To me they are very sad. My family is very fond of me, despite my appearance. My mom does not like how I look, but she does not tell me this, so I think all is well!
Sean Philips:That’s great. We can’t expect everyone to love our decisions but so long as they can love us in spite of them, it’s a good thing. So what’s next? Any major mod plans lie ahead for you?
Jenya: I really want to stretch my lips bigger.  I don’t know how practical it will be, but I love the look of them at the size of 200 by 100mm. I also love big septums. I really want to have a really big septum, but it is very difficult for me, because sometimes I have problems with keloids.
Sean Philips: 200×100mm, that is certainly ambitious as far as lip stretching goes, I hope it goes well for you. So the human platypus thing, could you explain that?

mail-31

Jenya: The platypus has a large bill which is very similar in appearance to the large stretched lips for human. Also, I really like the sound of the word “platypus” in English.

Sean Philips: Is this a theme you plan to carryon further, like how the Lizardman  transforms himself more and more to continue the lizard theme, or is this more of a nickname?
Jenya: It’s more of a nickname, I think the name “platypus” may be suitable for all people with big lips.
Sean Philips: Fair enough. So to anyone planning who may plan on taking their mods to the same extreme as you, do you have any words of wisdom to share?
Jenya: For these people? Yes. Never be in a hurry for a stretch. If you want big lips – you’ll have it, but after some time. The slower you go the bigger you can get…………..and good luck!

Lizard Skynard CD Release….today!

Ever since I first discovered The Lizardman, way back in my RAB days, I have kept up with his constant transformations, and new endeavors. Recently, he began a whole new chapter or his life. He has always been a performer, and for several years he was involved with music as the MC for the Jager Tour. Now he has taken the next obvious step, by fronting a band himself.

When I first heard about this, I expected it to be kind of a joke band…..a funny drunken joke band, but a joke band no less. But upon listening to it, it became obvious this is something the Lizardman was serious about. It’s not music for everybody,  but for people who enjoy Henry Rollins or Jim Carroll type spoken word, or who are die-hard Lizardman fans this is definitely an album to pick up. Then there is the live show, which like any Lizardman performance it will be well one not to miss. There will be the drunken sideshow antics we have all come to love combined with the musical onslaught served up by his band and him, I assure you it will be one show worth catching.

Here’s the official Bio from the bands website:

Lizard Skynard is an exciting new band fronted by the famous Lizardman and Mossy Vaughn from the band The Heavils (metalblade.com)…Erik ‘The Lizardman’ Sprague is an accomplished sideshow entertainer, world traveler, stand up comedian and professional FREAK.The band also features drummer Johnny baker from the grind band Waco Jesus and on bass Russell Gillespie (Mothertrucker,KeyChainToker) and Eric Vaughn on keyboards. The New album was recorded at Electrical Audio studios with Greg Norman and mastered at Chicago Mastering with Jason Ward…

Lizard Skynard members

This all started because Mossy wanted to play music again and saw Erik ‘The Lizardman’ Sprague as his meal-ticket. The Heavils were not playing and who better to start a new project with but his green friend.

They talked about this band for about two years over many Jagermeister shots and while indulging in chemical inspiration they found the perfect name: Lizard Skynard. It was a lot cooler than Lizzard of Oz or REO MeatLizard and it got the right mix of awe and amusement from all who heard it. Mossy brought his cousin Johnny Baker (from the band Waco Jesus) to play drums and did some demos. They then recruited former Mothertrucker bassist Russell Gillespie and former Iron Sausage keyboardist Eric Vaughn to make the band even stronger.

If you want to check it out for yourself,  you can stream it ,or order the cd from lizardskynardband.com or if you prefer the mp3 download it is available now on itunes.

Happy Birthday to the one and only,Penguin Boy!

My Buddy, Jason Brott aka Penguin Boy is celebrating his birthday today.  In case you are new here, I featured his first suspension on modblog and shortly thereafter that green dude from Lizard Skynard interviewed him here.

screen-shot-2010-07-21-at-13422-pm

There are so few “born freaks” in modern sideshow, we should remember to show  much respect to those who take what other’s would consider a disability and turn it into performance. So be sure and wish ‘ol Jason a happy birthday!

Answers to the trivia…

First off thanks to everyone who took the time to try and answer the trivia questions. I read each and every response, even after our winner was found, just to see who knew what and if there were any common misconceptions. I love body modifications and I love knowing where we (as the bod mod community) came from. I hope that the younger readers will see these questions and develop a yearning for more knowledge on our past, present and future.

I have left Jamie’s answers as she wrote them in italics, and added a bit to some in regular type, I have also added hyperlinks for more information.

-What does Muzak (the generic elevator music company) have to do with body piercing?

Wealthy Muzak executive Richard Simonton had a private life that involved participating in gay BDSM culture under the pseudonym Doug Malloy. He had multiple genital piercings and wrote a short autobiography called “The Adventures of a Piercing Freak.” He advanced Jim Ward the money to start Gauntlet, and is considered one of the pioneers of the resurgence of modern body piercing.

For a great interview with the man known as Doug Malloy (as well as for an all around good read) be sure to pick up the book Modern Primitives.

-What modern body modifier first made a name for himself by wholesaling CBR’s for under 4 bucks when Gauntlet was still charging around 20?

That would be Steve Haworth.

-What is Fakir Musafar’s birth name?

Fakir was born Roland Loomis.

-What does PFIQ stand for?

PFIQ is the common name for a publication known as Piercing Fans International Quarterly, which was published by Jim Ward.

-Name at least one of Erik Sprague’s aliases besides “The Lizardman”.

Eric Sprague uses the alias ‘thelizardman23′ for many online community and file sharing sites.

One answer I hadn’t considered, but got a lot was Lizard Skynard, his new band. Other possible answers would be Amago or Spidergod5. I think there may be a few others as well, but to quote the lizard himself, “If there is any doubt, then use Lizardman.”

-What does “TSD” stand for ?

TSD stands for Traumatic Stress Discipline, a suspension group. TSD originally stood for Traumatic Stress Disciples. However when a newscast misquoted it as Traumatic Stress Discipline the members decided to keep that name.

-What was Todd Bertrang formally arrested for?

The formal charges were: Child Porn, Obscenity, Conspiracy to Violate FGM Laws, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Todd Bertrang was a mod artist who performed genital cuttings. FBI agents posed as a wealthy Arabian couple looking to have their daughters’ genitals modified and offered 20 million dollars, to which he responded with “I’ll think about it.” The FBI raided his home, where they found “obscene photographs” (photos of his mod work), “child pornography”, and a gun. Because of this, he and his partner were put in prison.

This article Shannon wrote years ago gives good detail as to the events that went down.

-What is a RABbit?

A reader and participant in the newsgroup rec.arts.bodyart is known as a RABbit.

Before BME became an interactive community site, the best place on the net to discuss body mods was rec.arts.bodyart. One of these days I plan to do a feature on the old group, I just need to get some more replies from members.

-Who’s collection of photos, were the basis of the Shawn Porter Collection?

The Jack Yount Collection was the basis of the Shawn Porter collection.

-Who was the primary photographer of the BME trading cards and the Modcon books?

Philip Barbosa was the primary photographer.

-What bodmod artist worked with Dee Snyder to design the piercings seen in the movie “Strangeland”?

Piercing “design” for the movie was done by the then New York-based body modification artist Keith Alexander.

-What was BME’s original url?

bme.FreeQ.com

Bonus Question:

In the acronym DFWC, which stands for ‘Don’t Fuck With Chuck”, who is Chuck?

Allen Falkner, of course 🙂

This (as was pointed out by some in the comments) was a fairly easy trivia. However, lot’s of readers had no clue, which is why I feel it is important to get this info out there. I hope to do these trivias about once a month. If anyone has any suggestions for questions, as always, feel free to shoot me an email using the link next to my picture below this post.

BME Trivia

bme_logo

As an “old fart” by the piercing industries standard, I have a high appreciation for things in the modern history of body modification.  In talking with lots of young piercers and modification fans I am often shock and saddened by their total lack of knowledge (and to some degree lack of caring) about  where this community came from. This is why I try and do From The Vault features to show readers some of what happened pre-modblog.

Anyhow, I used to post these trivias on my iam page, with random prizes and I thought it would be fun to post them here occasionally as well.  I don’t have much in the way of a prize to offer, but whomever gets all the answers in first (or in the event no one gets them all right whoever gets the most correct this weekend) can either have a feature on themselves, or an artist or friend of their choice on modblog.

For the questions, keep on keeping on.

-What does Muzak (the generic elevator music company) have to do with body piercing?

-What modern body modifier first made a name for himself by wholesaling CBR’s for under 4 bucks when Gauntlet was still charging around 20?
