Modification takes an active role in each individual's life, whether or not they support or condemn it. Those who have embraced what modification has to offer are often misunderstood, for their intentions are not as seemingly clear as those who do not embrace such functions. However, as said before, each individual in today's society does reflect multiple physical changes to their image to represent who they are (amongst other reasons) and thus... modification rests within each and every person.
At A Glance Author Ryan Contact [email protected] When N/A The easy part of making such a claim factual is proving that modification does take place in each individual. Being "modified" is a term simply used when a person changes an aspect of themselves (physically or mentally) to better suit their needs. This covers such grounds as a haircut, painting of ones nails, or even the clothes you should choose to wear. Clearly in today's society it is viewed that modification takes place only in the high extremes (tattooing and piercing), which is not true. Society has simply adjusted its views, and found certain forms of modification more acceptable than others.
With this situation, multiple claims (which are based on nothing more then opinion) are publicly portrayed towards the community. Thus the same adult, who wears glasses, shaves his head, and wears only blue jeans, sees those who choose to have a hoop hanging from their nose as a foreign concept. The "non-modified" community fuels these images, which seek to determine a fine deference between these two peoples.
This is simply outrageous, for the only difference is the measurement in which we change ourselves. The only problem is making people see and understand this. When those who take part in only slight forms of modification (the "norms") make such claims as, "They do it for attention," or "They do it to be different," are simply misunderstood. Each individual, no matter how heavily or lightly modified, has a unique concept towards life, and thus, no direct reason can be publicly portrayed as factual... but rather uneducated opinion.
But why would a person what to change themselves if it caused pain? One will never completely know, but a suggestion would be to ask every female who plucks her eyebrows. It is the same concept. Modification is nothing more then change, and each of us embraces and deals with change in our own way.
Over time, however, more heavy forms of modification have been found more durable. Forty years ago showing your navel would be extremely unorthodox. Should you choose to get it pierced, such reactions could be unbearable. But whether or not a person believes it, society is adjusting. It is only a matter of time before people attempt to see everyone as equals.
But how do you get people to view and understand such an aspects as this? Forcing the community to adjust will never work, for there are far more hypocrites than not. This change does take place, however. In the last 10 years, more tattoo, piercing and other modification shops have opened then ever before. More youth (along with adults, for that matter) are now taking an active part in these traits. Parents, despite their ignorance in some cases, now deal with these changes within the household. This allows for adjustments within the work place and public as well. It is very unlikely the father of modified children is going to rebel against such changes in a drastic way. Most drastic reactions occur out of mere panic and misconception, not out of knowledge or respect.
If life will teach a person anything, it is that some things do never change. No matter how deep in the palms of evolution society finds itself, the fist of resistance will remain. One can only hope that some people will come to understand that ones outer surface does not reflect ones quality person.
It seems as of late, there have not been many defensive actions made by the heavily modified community. This offers little moral justice for those who read the daily newspaper only to be offended by someone's uneducated opinion. Is it not rather sad that people must write lines and lines upon paper, simply to justify something that makes them happy? Should that not be all the reason a person should need?
"Live life the best way you can anything less is suicide."
This article was written for multiple reasons, but obviously, it was more of a rant. I've read far too many false claims towards what we call the "modified community," and I simply grow tired of it. Each individual has his or her own wants or needs, and nobody has the right to decide which are which. How many articles do I have to read which make such pessimistic statements? They do not mention at a high majority (probably higher then the "norms") of modified people are, in fact, just as intelligent and theistic as anyone else. Instead, we are all attention-seeking hogs who hate our father's, hey... how could it ever be anything but?
