Howie encased the heart-shaped cartilage punch left-overs he did on Helen at the Laundry in Brisbane, Australia. I wonder if it’ll stay looking like this, or if it will decay or change underneath the resin? And could this be implanted as an implant? I don’t see why not, assuming the silicone is biocompatible. Now I’m thinking I have to get something punched out so I can wear it as jewelry… or implant it!

I TOTALLY first thought of it as an awesome plug to be worn in the ear or something 😀

It would be neat for significant others to each get something punched, and then have the remaining bits implanted in each other (the other person). It would be a pretty strong representation of the commitment of the relationship.

I don’t think you can implant that; resin used for casting jewellery is typically a 2-part epoxy resin containing epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A, which are nasty, nasty chemicals.

Magick is the main thing that came to mind when I thought of implanting someone else’s tissue into my body.

i’d like to save my labia when i finally cut and use them as a lip piece. a piece of lip in a lip piece. pun intended, but serious.
great stuff.

For anybody interested, there’s healed pics on Howie’s IAM page.
Reminds me of those old plugs with the insects in them. Anybody remember those?

it won’t likely decay, however when resin is exposed to moisture for a long period of time, it can deteriorate and become tacky. this is why insects and specimens must be dried out before being preserved in resin.
i make resin plugs, and not sure if you meant this in the post or not, but resin and silicone are not the same thing i guess you could try coating the cured resin in cured silicone. resin is not very biocompatible, though it depends on the type.

I agree. I do think it will degrade slightly over time. I have seen a lot of human tissues preserved in resin and they start to look slightly old. I have preserve insects and arachinds and they stay quite well. Some of my older scorpions look slightly “old”.
I think the resin would have horriable biocompatibility. I really hope no one was trying to make plugs out that. The resin compound is really horriable for skin and it is toxic. I have gotten it on my skin before and it takes quite a long time to get off.
but yeah, they look awesome!!! I just don’t think that material is safe for body jewelry use..

there are lots of different types of resin. there are the kinds for industrial work and the kinds specifically for jewelry making. there are kinds for glossing bartables. you can do anything with resin, and when it cures, some grades are a lot like acrylic. not that acrylic is healthy. it won’t kill you though.

Yea resin can be a bitch to work with but if it’s just Famowood Glaze Coat from Lowe’s I wouldn’t risk it as an implant

Perhaps you could do something like this in acrylic? Still not a great choice but better jewallary than resin!

I still have the tissue from my conch saved to one side to be mounted in a lobe plug when I’m settled at one size… sadly the conch is only 4mm, this would work far better!
I don’t know about larger chunks of tissue, but I kept my conch in saline for a while, and now it’s dried itself out quite neatly without mould or decay setting in.
Somebody have a word with Von Haagens & see about plastinated plugs! -grins-

I would love to have something like as a plug, but to echo everyone else’s concerns about biocompatibility, why not just fit the resin into a steel or titanium eyelet? It might work, but then again, I’m no jewellry maker.

Does anyone have any more info on what happened with this? Did the resin keep the tissue from breaking down? I ask because I have the piece of my ear from a fresh conch removal currently in my freezer and I’m interested in doing this so I’m wondering if it actually keeps it in good condition. Also should I thaw the piece out before casting it in resin or should I just do it frozen? And tips or info is greatly appreciated!
