Finally an interview with Don!

We finally had a chance to interview Don, BME’s most prolific experience reviewer… which arguably makes him in many ways the best informed, or at least the most broadly aware, person on the planet regarding the personal experience of body modification! Click the picture to jump to the interview:

  1. He is so awesome! I used to work in a library and no one ever commented on my piercings, so thumbs up to libraries.

  2. I love that there are older people who are modified, seeing as the most commen remark I get about my modifications is “what about when you’re older? You’ll regret it.” People like Don prove those ignorant people wrong. Modification isn’t about age. It’s not limited to teens and adolesents, it’s for everyone. Even librarians :)

  3. yay! it’s actually my dream in life to be a (modified) librarian/bookseller, so Don’s my hero. And he reviews LOTS of experiences, which just makes him better!

  4. I’ve always been impressed with Don’s work and I love when he reviews my own experiences, so it was great to read the interview and get some insight into the way he sees things!

    Thanks for this one!

  5. You’re the coolest ;) I agree with comment number 7

It makes me smile to think that a 40 year old librarian would get a PA for his first piercing, I don’t really know why but it makes me smile. I’m 18 and I’m still working up the nerve to get a vertical hood (I’ve wanted one for about 2 years now) just too chicken, so I have to tell you how much respect I have for you…and now I’m babbling so I’ll stop.
    Cheers

  6. Wow, the infamous Don. I think everyone with an IAM account has reviewed experience submissions at some point and they are time consuming and require a lot of thought. The sheer number of reviews you have done is daunting.

  7. Don is a legend, pure and simple. I didn’t mind one bit when he took over my #1 spot as an experience reviewer a few years ago. Clearly he has had more endurance for the task than I have. Haha! Well done Don and Roo on a great interview. A worthwhile subject to be featured if ever there was one.

  8. He seems lovely! And it’s interesting what he says about libraries being tolerant of mods – at the library nearest my home in Edinburgh, there were a few members of staff who were visibly modified. Seems like it doesn’t matter very much in that context :)

  9. Yay Don is great and I like it that he IM’s you with a nice wee comment now and again on a particular experience you’ve written that he’s read and likes.

  10. what a lovely interview.
don seems like a wonderful, charming, intelligent man.
not to mention all the great work he does by reviewing and reading all those experiences that come into b.me.
how superb of him to do so.
    :)

  11. What a great interview! I am also a librarian w/ mods, so I can relate. Lots of mixed reactions :) I look up to Don!

  12. I used to live in Stratford, and I always remember that there was a pierced older guy who worked in the library and as a child I thought he was awesome, and now I know who he was!
Thanks to Don for being an inspiration when I was younger and for still being one now :-)

  13. Spot on Roo.
Don is the man :) great interview, nice to hear what the man behind 20K of reviews is realy like

  14. i used to work in surrey libraries… i guess it depends on the manager, mine was old and hated my piercings with a passion! didn’t stop me from getting my tongue pierced and passing it off as toothache while it healed! found the kids found them fascinating (worked in the children’s library), but a lot of the older people thought they were weird and unnatural! but now i live in eastbourne – and it’s all much more relaxed. hooray for piercings!

  15. There are few people I respect more than Don. He is a gentle soul with a serenity that is so beautful.

He is one of the people you can’t help, but enjoy to, hanging-out with.

Long may he continue with his ‘mission’ on BME.

We so do love you old friend ;)

  16. I work at the university library at UNL in NE and they have no problems with body mods it seems; I’ve got three visible tattoos and 7/16th ears, my boss has a pretty nice leg tattoo visible in the summer…props to libraries and their leniency! Props to Don as well, for going where not many people go at 40something!
