  1. good article, fascinating story…I think I’ll meditate on this for a while.
    A few questions though…
I liked the ending, but Buck still calls himself a man..
What does he define as a man? It can’t be genitalia, chromosomes…really anything biological I guess. Does he believe we can be any sex we declare ourselves to be?
Also, was the decision to keep his vagina for sexual reasons? He wasn’t willing to risk the 50% chance of not ever having an orgasm again?
I know if I hadn’t been told he used to be a woman I wouldn’t be able to guess it, but after staring at the pictures for a while his head and face also look feminine (just me?).
Also, when he has sex with his wife, does he like to feel like a man? I mean does he have dominance issues, like to use strap ons…maybe this is a bit too personal, but I think this is very interesting 🙂
(The cigar is funny ^_^ )

  3. If you watch his mini documentary, or any of a number of interviews, these questions would be answered, but to save time: Buck Angel feels like a man and has so his whole life. Even as a a female model in the 80′s, Buck (whose “female name”, as he likes to call it, is Susan) always felt more like a man than a woman. This is the case for most transgendered people. You don’t need the biology to feel this to be an undeniable truth in yourself.

He doesn’t want to get the surgery to have a penis for two major reasons. First, the surgery is massively expensive, somewhere in the range of $50-70k. Second, the technology does not exist right now, at any cost, to give a woman a penis that will work like a real penis should, e.g. become fully erect, ejaculate, bring one to orgasm. The penis is essentially useless. Buck, however, feels that he has become enough of the man that he feels he is, even without the addition of proper genitalia.

As for the question of sex, watch his movies! He has sex in all kinds of different ways. He is a pornstar, so I’m sure that question isn’t “too personal”.

(note: I’m not an expert on the matter, I just watched two interviews and the mini-doc about 20 minutes ago, and he says all of this stuff repeatedly, just tryin’ to help y’all out, timewise. I do also have many many tranny friends, and biology is certainly not the issue, I assure you.)

  7. loved his story. literally someone just being themselves without boundaries and categories that we feel we need to place ourselves in.

  9. Also gender and sex are two separate things. If you just arbitrarily decide to call yourself a man, it doesn’t make it so; if you identify as a man (you feel you are a man, you don’t feel right as a woman, etc.), then I think your claim to manhood is legitimate. It’s a confusing, complicated thing, but I think identifying/living as whatever gender and working toward a physical change to that gender is completely valid and makes you that gender. And of course, gender and sex are not limited to our binary system. And when he has sex with his wife (disregarding that he is a porn star for a minute), why assume that he has issues? Sex doesn’t have to involve a penis or penis substitute. It doesn’t have to conform to a gender binary. Whatever genitals are involved don’t require certain equipment or issues to have sex. That said, he is a porn star and it should be easy to find plenty of his porn to see for yourself.

I am so angry about ftm genital surgery. It is like it doesn’t even matter that it is just a lump of useless flesh and not a functional dick. Granted, a penis is a really complicated organ, but damn, shouldn’t there be some kind of medical advancement here??

  19. Very interesting article ! Since I’ve been reading BME for years, I’ve already heard about him quite a lot of times, but I didn’t really knew about his history and such.

  23. I met Buck a few months ago during an interview he did with at show at CIUT in Toronto (I was the technician). It was definitely one of the best (and one of my favourite) interviews that I have ever heard. He’s so well spoken and interesting, and it was wonderful to get the chance to get up close and personal. 🙂

  25. while I think there are about a million really interesting points about buck, what I keep thinking every time I see him is that his muscle structure is pretty amazing. He has shaped and built his body very very well and this is often hard for people who were or are female bodied.

  27. #13 “buck is all dude”

You obviously don’t really feel that way since you’re still putting “he” and “wife” in quotation marks. That’s not respectful.

  29. Really good article. The part about him squirting at the Stern show made me laugh out loud.
It was awesome, except for that whole bit about how all lesbians hate men.
It sucks that his friends dropped him because they didn’t understand who he is, but it isn’t fair to all dykes to say that they all have issues with guys. Not cool…

I’ve heard of Buck before and it’s awesome how comfortable he is with talking about his life and his body. He definitely has a lot of patience with people who don’t understand his decisions.
