Going Deep

Deep chest piercings are one of those rare kinds of piercings that are just staggering to look at.  The sheer intensity of the piercing alone is puts it in the realm of suspensions and other things that push the limits of a person.  I don’t have any information about these piercings, so I can’t tell you if they’re intended to last for any length of time or not, but the piercing process alone is something to be commended for.  These particular piercings were done at Sacred Art Body Piercing in Newcastle.

  1. i can tell you there are intended for a long period of time. The piercing was performed by Jake, with help from Mick.
Thumbs up to a great result. Not a fan of the way they look, but have massive respect for the piercing, the piercers, and the piercee

  3. I did a cursory check of the wiki, and I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask but; how is a piercing like this done? The size of the posts through his chest is staggering to me. Having seen multiple pictures of Fakir through the years, it seems like he started his deep chest piercings at a small gauge and (I assume) stretched them. How on earth do you go about shoving posts that thick and long (bow chicka bow wow) through the skin of the chest? Dermal punches on either end and slide it through till you find the second hole? I’ve seen deep chest piercings before, and I’m still amazed what the human body will endure.

  5. These have confounded me for so many years. I don’t think anyone has healed them, but I definitely remember seeing photos somewhere of someone who tried, and then the abscess seeping out from them after they were removed. Ew.

  7. Look up IAM:Stormchaser, he has large gauge surface piercings he suspends from regularly.

I absolutely hate when people do this types of piercings without doing their homework. Big Gauge=Big Stress. A big fuckin tent peg through the chest heals just like a straight barbell through a lump of skin and calling it a surface piercing.

Sure these can be healed but not with this type of shit in them

  9. Apart from Fakir, I also only know people who had them for awhile and then had to take them out again as they never really fully healed. That said, they are fascinating indeed.
Siete: Herfried (iam stormchaser)’s “permanent suspension” surface piercings are 5mm in diameter and far smaller than these. And “this type of shit” seems to be standard for deep chest piercings; I’ve seen this type of ‘jewelry’ used all the time.

  11. I really want to try and heal deep chest piercings if I ever get the chance. Maybe, once I’m older. I feel like you would definitely have to dedicate a lot of time to healing them and during the process watch just about everything you do in your daily life.

But, I know very little about them. I’d love to see this article extended with an interview from the artist. I definitely have a lot of respect for the people involved.

  13. Bastian: But this standard, I think, is quite the reason these percings don’t work well. Even that bit piercings can reject, if forces are pulling permanently. And that’s what happens, movement of the body, and a straight line piercing, with knobs on both sides = Push and pull, always outward force.

That is a piercing-killer. A classical but large surface piercing probably would work better.

  17. Alright let me clarify things a bit.

First “this type of shit” refers to the way too big, way too round rods in a suface piercing. For this to be even somewhat successful they would need to be flatter with 90* ends, both of which are needed to alleviate upward pressure.

Secondly these have to be scalpelled in with the skin being elevated to position these pieces correctly

I would put money on these tent pegs being removed in 2-3months with huge amounts of migration

  19. kudos for the commitment for these things, but the thing that has REALLY perplexed me about these kinds of pierceings (and suspensions of any type) is the risk of nerve damage and the complications that arise from the development of scar tissue. are these pretty much subdermal? just kind of floating between the pectoralis muscles and the subcutaneous layer of the skin?

  21. I’m no piercer or anything, but I have done extensive amounts of reading and research, both in school and for personal enrichment, and from what I’ve learned about deep chest piercings has already been covered by one individual or another in the string of comments. But alas, I have something else to offer the the curious masses if interested.
I’ve read about, talked with the artist, and even with one that it was performed on, and learned about what I feel is a much better way to implement this procedure. Like it was stated a few comments previous, these deep chest piercings will probably be removed shortly down the road due to migration or another series of unfortunate events, but then again they may not simply because of the marvels the human body is capable of. Even so, I don’t think actually ‘piercing’ the chest for this procedure is the way to go, instead implanting. This way, the body is closed up instead of remaining open and at high risk for infection, the fistula is given ideal conditions to heal and not be irritated during said healing, and healing times in general should be sped up just because its not an open wound.
After ‘x’ amount of time, one would revisit the artist, have their implants evaluated, and if they are doing fine, then proceed to finish the procedure. Make your openings on each end of your implant, then insert your longer jewelry. This way, the body has ample time to adjust to its new addition, your not dealing with a huge open wound, but instead smaller much more manageable areas, pain should be reduced some I’d imagine.
If one were to compare chest piercings to other aspects of bodily modification, I think that the general concenus would be that they are more compareable to an actual sub-dermal or trans-dermal implant then they would be to a piercing. But then again, I’m just some stupid kid who looks forward to the very extreme =D

  25. Siete your comments illustrate your ignorance – these are deep chest piercings that I did scalpel and elevate to place the jewelery similar to placing an implant. Large gauge jewelery = big trauma and the body responds accordingly, the larger the gauge also means less pressure on the tissue. They are NOT surface piercings, the placement ensured reasonable curvature and the resulting forward pressure is minimized as much as possible. The main difficulty healing such a procedure is the length of the piercing and the bodies’ ability to drain over this length, again – the larger the gauge the better the chances. The jewelery, rather than being tent pegs are custom made teflon, roughly 8mm, flat section on the underside and curved on top again to minimize pressure, particularly at the entry and exit points. Extreme procedures like these often come with inherent problems and always come with a variety of techniques, I take these procedures quite seriously. I have over 12years industry experience and have consulted/worked alongside many of the notable piercing/mod artists in the industry. Beyond this I have a degree in human movement and physical education, have lectured in human biomechanics, human physiology and worked in the health sector (Autralian Institute of Sport) in similar capacities. Reading a few articles and talking to an artist or two doesnt really cut it and I will take the remainder of inane comments with a grain of salt. 🙂

  27. Why have we never seen this kind of piercing on females? If it went through a breast vs. guy’s tighter chest, seems there would be LESS chance at rejection. I know women are (sadly) grossly under-represented in the more extreme modifications but there must be one or two out there with this?

  29. deep chest piercings have been done on women, remember there is a whole other world outside of bme.

  31. I am sure it’s been done; I was just noting that neither BME nor anywhere else that I have been able to find seems to document it, which is unfortunate as it seems to me (just opinion) that it would cause less problems given the lack of pressure pushing out. Oh well.
