Dan DiMattia Rocks

Not only is he an amazing tattoo artist, but he’s loads of fun to wrestle (so I hear). If I make it to Belgium again (last time I was there I was in bad shape and a bit of a druggie), I’m going to try and do both. I’m a big fan of both him and his muse (who you know best from Needled.com).

This great chest-piece is by him, but you can click the picture and see a full-face tattoo he did as well.

  1. I believe Dan will be visiting NYC sometime this winter doing a residency at Tattoo Culture http://tattooculture.net/ in Brooklyn! I asked him to punch me in my arm during his last visit and he nearly knocked me off my feet…..very funny! :o)

  3. something in that picture strikes me as a bit off. He doesnt seem to have the face to fit the full chest piece. Guess you really cant judge a book by its cover!

  5. this is fantastic, but even though the design is abstract I read it as a bunch of wine glasses emptying their contents.

  7. The moko on the click thru pic is nice, but I get a bit of an off feeling about non-Maori sporting Maori tatts… I do understand people are gonna rip things from other cultures more and more often, but ta moko (esp.full-face) is of such huge importance to tribes here…

  9. awwww…shucks, Shannon! thank you and everyone for the kind words on Dan’s work. he is beyond flattered and gives y’all a big virtual bear hug!

Angiebabynz makes some good points about non-Maori sporting Ta Moko but the facial tattoo on Dan’s site is far from Ta Moko. The patterns are very loosely based on KIRI TUHI, which is not ancestral but patterns that have no geneological meaning and can be used by non-Maori. We’ve had Maori artist Ben Te Hau stay in our home for a summer and got a great education on how to respect the Maori people in tattoo and not tread on cultural appropriation.

  15. Dan is a fantastic artist, as well as an amazing tattooist he is one of the nicest guys in the industry and the values and ideas that both he and his wife promote could be a lesson for the whole industry. Cant wait to get more work.
