  1. I love when I hit refresh and there’s an update 10 minutes after the one that I just saw. I try to imagine you hard at work behind a computer monitor. 🙂

  5. I love how organic that looks — so alien in such a familiar way, if that makes any sense.

  7. it has a beautifully organic flow… but when i first looked at it i thought it was a snake – on closer inspection i thought it was some sort of horrifyingly large intestinal parasite. i’m going to blame it on one too many parasitology classes and call it a day 🙂 now that i know it’s not going to wiggle, i really find it intriguing and lovely!

  11. Why endorse something on BME that is actually described as harmful on the site itself (in the Encyclopedia)? Not to mention, in many other perfectly reputable sources. I don’t understand. Polymer clay is not for long-term (i.e., more than a few hours) wear, albeit this jewelry is definitely very attractive. If only it weren’t dangerous…

  13. On the site it says they’re made of ‘polymer’, looking at the pics I presume that’s fimo. :/

  15. So if polymer clays are potentially harmful due to leeching of who knows what chemicals, why not wear some kind of barrier between the plug and the ear? What about wearing the polymer piece inside of a clear silicone earskin? If the polymer jewelry were particularly large and ornate, I could even see this helping them to remain secure in one’s ears. Any thoughts on this? I’m only just starting to stretch my own lobes but the things I could do with polymer clay…

  17. Gorgeous, even if only for a few hours. Heck, we arent supposed to wear high heels for longer than that either.

  19. Those could have just been made for a photo shoot or special event. It doesnt say “THIS GIRL IS GOING TO WEAR THOSE EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE” anywhere.

  21. nope-
If you look on the website, the set is named cordyceps – which is actually an incredibly cool kind of parasitic fungus that colonizes living insects. After they die, the fruiting bodies grow out of their exoskeletons. It’s almost more creepy than intestinal parasites!

  23. lol…yeah…they’d be a bit impratical to wear all day…i just really like the shape and look of them…

the high heel comment made me giggle…

  25. They’re selling those on etsy.com. I think they’re beautiful but the fact that they’re polymer clay scared me off.

  27. What if they were sealed with a safe varnish? Could that be considered a barrier between the earlobe and polymer?

No, it doesn’t. But the wording on some of the designs she’s selling is questionable at best:

But wait, polymer isn’t organic, right?
    WRONG.
Despite what you’ve been told, EVERYTHING on Earth is organic.
    How can it not be?
If it’s of this Earth, whether an “element” or a biproduct of elements, what’s of this Earth is from this Earth.

Some of her pieces are quite nice, but I think she’s misrepresenting things a bit.

  31. While I’m all about being cautious with jewelry, especially stuff made w/ fimo, I would say that these pieces are pretty clearly for an artistic purpose.. not everyday wear.

And yeah, I actually feel the same way about high heels as I do fimo. Short term wear highly recommended.

  33. Everything I was going to say about beautiful jewelry and polymer clay construction has already been said. She’s got some gorgeous pieces, though.

  35. It’s a rather lovely piece. Reminds me of the guy that looks romulan who had a lot of them in his ear and everyone was freaking out about what it actually was.

  37. and nobody freaked the fuck out for some one having jesus in there ear? preety sure thats not an ear safe material or a good shape for wearing for a long time……..just like like this evedintly is.

  39. I’ve stuck pencils in my ears for fun, but I wouldn’t pay a lot of cash for those pencils. If I want something “special,” I’d rather spend my cash on something I know is safe–Anatometal blings come to mind. (Implant grade metal > Fimo. It’s just a fact. There is no arguing with this fact.)

But that quote from her site, about everything being organic? So are bic pens. So is hemlock. So are all sorts of poisonous things. Some things are LESS organic / more refined from a “natural” state than others. That doesn’t mean you stick them in your ears. Some people have violent allergic reactions to woods that others swear by! Just because it’s organic doesn’t mean it’s safe. I’d feel a lot better about this artist if he/she made it VERY CLEAR that these are meant to be worn for a very short period, not for long-term use.

  41. I don’t get why people are freaking out so much. this is OBVIOUSLY an editorial shot. For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, go pick up a copy of Vogue and look for the pictures of the models wearing 9 inch stilettos and hats so huge it’s a wonder their heads don’t fall down.

  43. The only thing that concerns me is the artist is selling polymer clay that has already been worn by ‘models’, and I presume can’t be autoclaved. They are very beautiful though, I haven’t seen any body jewelery produced like these pieces.

  45. I would love to purchase some of the pieces, but it’s pretty gross they’ve all been worn. They’re not something that can be autoclaved.

  49. First thought: Funky Bluetooth headset!

Also, I think we’re having some kind of confusion between the laymen’s use of “organic” meaning “natural”, the scientific use of “organic”, meaning “made of carbon chains”, which definitely includes plastic, and the artistic use of “organic” meaning “curvy”. Semantics, people!

  51. #15 suggested wearing earskins as a barrier between the polymer and the flesh. Great idea!

And I remember seeing one of those fungi coming out of an ant corpse in National Geographic.

  53. Wow.
Good work class. Such thought provoking ideas.
Just a recap on all that was spoken about.
The pieces are not already worn. Instead the pieces on my site are templates for custom orders. The ones you order have never been worn.
Polymer is questionable material, true. But so is everything. I wouldn’t sleep wearing my jewelry, nor should you. Take it out when you sleep and shower, as you should with most ear jewelry worn in healed ears.
Sunscreen and most of the foods you eat give you cancer, my jewelry shouldn’t be a problem. A lot of orthotics and prosthetics are made from polymers. Google it and see. Polymer has been deemed harmful in it’s “wet” state, this is when it’s unbaked. Polymer is most dangerous to oral-fixated unsupervised toddlers. That’s it. No one has ever reported a bio-comparability problem from wearing my jewelry yet. That’s not to say it can’t ever happen, but not yet.
I’ve had ear reactions from Ocean Jasper.
As a lot of you said, polymer would best be worn for hours at a time. And quite frankly, what more could you want? A few hours seems an adequate enough wearing time.
It’s true, the Mayans never wore Polymer yet Egyptians wore some severely toxic makeup. And guess what? They died, and so will you. It’s OK, too.
You won’t find polymer in a lot of piercing shops, but a few want me to consign jewelry there. I’m very interested in working in more materials as well. If you have any ideas, or know anyone who’d like to collaborate with me, send them my way.
I’d really like to make some brass and steel ear pieces, but I don’t have the equipment yet. However, if anyone’s seriously interested in obtaining some in brass or silver, get in touch. It’s a bit expensive to make molds and pour metal, but if you want them, I’ll make them.
Thanks for your support and criticism.
If you want to speak with me about any pieces, or just want to keep updated on my new designs you can find me at: perishables.etsy.com or email me at [email protected]

    Thanks.

  55. Does anyone know how I can find this artist now? I bought perishables jewelry several years ago and can’t find the beautiful things anywhere. I wish so much that I could order some again. Any help would be appreciated!
