BMEfest FAQ!

Do I have to buy a ticket to BMEfest?

No, the gathering in High Park this year is free. ModProm II – the formal dinner/party to follow is not, you must have purchased a ticket to ModProm II.

What time does BMEfest start/wrap-up?

BMEfest will begin in High Park at 10:00am and will wrap-up by 3:00pm.

Where is BMEfest?

BMEfest is located in High Park, Toronto, Canada. Take the TTC Subway to High Park Station and walk across Bloor Street to enter the park. For those of you driving, High Park is located between Bloor Street & The Queensway, just west of Keele Street. The main entrance is located at Bloor & High Park Avenue.

(Click here for a map of the park (PDF). The party will be located in Picnic Area #8, which is located between the Grenadier Café and the sports fields.)

When you enter the park follow either the West Road or Colbourne Lodge Road until you reach the Grenadier Restaurant (there is some parking at the restaurant), and then walk behind the restaurant over “Hawk Hill” until you reach the picnic area. Alternatively you can follow the West Road into the park and cut through the sports fields (there is a path that follows them around) straight through until you reach the picnic area.

Will there be parking available?

There is parking in the park, however you should arrive early if you’re driving because parking will be in high demand for Canada Day.

How do I get a BMEfest Event Shirt?

Because of the park permit rules we’re not allowed to have any type of open-air market set up. But if you want a BMEfest event shirt, speak to Ryan at the event. He may just have a few in his car!

Will there be suspensions at BMEfest?

NO! For two reasons:

1: It gives the Toronto Parks & Recreation a reason to come and hassle us.

2: Attaching anything (including a person) to a tree is a violation of the permit we have been issued and could result in both personal fines for the event organizer and termination of the event.

What should I bring?

Bring: Sunblock, water & food (we will be providing some refreshments), money for snacks & other sundries. It’s a picnic – prepare for that: Blankets, et cetera..

Will there be alcohol at the event?

Alcohol is NOT permitted in the park. If you feel the need to drink there is a restaurant nearby. As per the conditions of the permit, obnoxious alcohol consumption will result in the termination of the event by park authorities.

What if I’m too shy to play the Scene Points Game?

The “Scene Points Game” is designed to be a humourous social experiment only, a way to meet people, NOT a hazing ritual. Everyone is encouraged to play. There are some great prizes and you might just make a new friend or two!

All Things Shoe

Ladies And Gentlemen (but especially the ladies), do you need shoes for ModProm to go with your dress? I recommend you entertain these three options for super shoe shopping!

www.fluevog.com

www.townshoes.com

All are located in the Toronto downtown core and easy to find via public transit from your hotel.

Also, if your love of all things shoe is greater then your love for BME I suggest you make a pilgrimage to the incredible Bata Shoe Museum.

Updos by Kim

jedi-kim.jpg
Jedi Kim – Hair stylist to the modified (including some of the BME staff).

So, ladies, if you want to look super gorgeous for ModProm II you can contact Kim and she will do your hair in the comfort of your hotel room.

Cost: $50 minimum on all styles (a quote will be provided in the online/email consultation). You must send Kim a photo of current hair and example of what you want, a 50% deposit required is up front before the appointment can be confirmed.

Before: Don’t was your hair for 24 hours before the appointment. Updos work better on naturally dirty hair and I don’t want to be fighting squeaky clean hair, nor blow-drying hair for half an hour. Updos can take up to an hour if the hair is clean, so please do not wash your hair!

Accessories: Any hair accessories must be purchased ahead of time and brought to the appointment (clips, barrettes, flowers, et cetera).

Please allow enough time for your style, as I am human not a machine.

Please wear a button down shirt/robe/tank top for your hair session so that you may change clothes easily.

Tipping is appreciated.

Hair appointments will be on July 1st between 2 and 6pm (last booking 5pm).

I will take up to six people, but no less than three. If there is not enough need, I reserve the right to cancel.

I am currently waiting on confirmation of a second stylist that will be able to fill another six appointments.

sXe Cocktails

So as not to offend our friends of the blade and to also recognise that there will be designated drivers at ModProm II we’ll be offering a selection of virgin cocktails for your enjoyment!

The Academy has a lovely Orange Peel Ale that’s like summer in a glass! Keep your eyes open for the tap proudly displaying an orange, so do order it if light summer beer titillates you.

Anyway, here’s the selection..

The Knuckle Duster!

3 ounces of V8 vegetable juice.
2 to 3 drops of tabasco sauce
A pinch of salt.
A dash of pepper.
Half a slice of lotus root.
A solitary celery stick.

Directions – Pour V8 into an old-fashioned glass, add the tabasco sauce and stir with the solitary celery stalk. Garnish with half a slice of lotus root. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and serve.

The Straight Razor!

3 ounces of cranberry juice
3 ounces of grapefruit juice
2 ounces of peach nectar
A slice of lime and a slice of lemon.

Directions – Find yourself a chilled glass, pour the above mixture over ice and stir. Garnish with slices of lemon and lime.

Tuxedo Rentals

A really nice suit does make the man, just ask your date! Renting a tuxedo can be a pain and making sure you are fitted correctly is a must, tailors will need at least two business days to outfit you in the manner you’ve become accustomed to. If you need to be fitted on premises you will need to be there no later than Thursday, June 28th (before noon).

If you know all your measurements already or can call them in as soon as possible the tailor will do their best to accommodate you I’m sure. My recommendation is to have a look at the websites below and pick a style you like, give them an idea of your measurements and put a tuxedo on hold so you will be ready to pick it up the day before the event. Returning the rented tuxedo is something you should try to arrange with your hotel concierge, usually a $10 courier charge is all you will incur, and some of the tailors will pick up for free if there are enough of you returning at the same time.

Tuxedo rentals as recommended by the very friendly concierge at the Weston Harbour Castle:

SydSilver.com

$10 rush fee for anything ordered after June 22nd.
Average price: $150 to $200 with some accessories included, please enquire.
Contact: Janna or whoever picks up the phone.

FreemanFormal.com

$10 rush fee for anything ordered after June 22nd.
Prices start between $80 and $140 plus accessories, please enquire.
Contact: Vicki or whoever picks up the phone.

Both companies have been in business for a long, long time and really do a great job. Freeman Formal may seem cheaper for the basic rental but as you add accessories the cost will rise very quickly so your best bet is to call both and price out what you want (and most importantly what you like).

Sticks and Balls

Is the art of hitting balls with a big stick your thing? If so you have to attend this event!

BME, ModProm and The Academy are pleased to welcome Canadian Snooker Champion and sports commentator Jim Wych!

jim-wych.jpg

As one of Canada’s most recognized and authoritative figures in the world of billiards, he has overseen countless events and will make sure The Academy’s century old Billiard tables are rocking all night.

His dazzling display of trick shot wizardry combines billiard artistry with a colourful presentation of light humour that is sure to be a real crowd pleaser.

Lighthearted competition will also be on the menu as well as a very informal mini-clinic on the do’s and don’t’s of playing billiards. During the evening Jim And BME will be hosting an organized and informal BME Billiards Tournament. If you’d like to take part in the first BME tournament of sticks and balls contact your host Philip Barbosa when you sign in.

Cuban Cigars @ ModProm II

cigar-header.jpg

BME has acquired a (human) Cuban cigar roller through Correnti Cigars for ModProm II.

In the Brunswick room of The Academy will be a (human) Cuban cigar roller to hand-roll cigars in the native Cuban tradition. This demonstration is meant to showcase the dedication, preparation, passion and skill that goes into the creation of each individual masterpiece.

If you’d like to pick up a souvenir cigar for you (or your date) you can purchase one from the Correnti table for just $15. There will be many different styles to choose from and if you are travelling into the US after ModProm II these cigars are not subject to Cuban trade embargoes as they are made in Canada by defected Cuban cigar rollers. Huzzah!

You too can look this cool, with a BME cigar!
