Prehispanic Mexican Body Modification

Speaking of Mexico, another gringo expat down here in the body modification world is IAM:Gorilla (who makes the gorgeous glass jewelry that BMEshop stocks). Anyway, he’s down in Oaxaca and sent some photos of Olmec pottery such as these prehispanic clay ear spools:

Here you can see some being worn in a piece of sculpture:

And finally, a sculpture of a baby in a head-shaping cradle (the cradle puts pressure on the skull, shaping it and giving it a distinctive sloped appearance).

Modified Podcast

So a couple guys have started attempting the task of doing a weekly podcast (ie. downloadable MP3 “radio” show) called the “Modified Podcast” (Phil thinks “ModCast” is a better idea — I like “ModPod” or “PodMod” personally) talking about various body modification related news stories. Their first show just came out. It’s a little “rambly” and rough around the edges, but you can click here to download it now (17mb) or click below to jump to their current website.

I must have these nails!!!

A lot of the modified women (and some of the modified men) you’llmeeton IAM appreciate the art — and luxury — of a good manicure andpedicure. In searching for rhinestones, *chel* (my hero!) has surpassed my searchingskillsand I bow to her, albeit begrudgingly.

I also want the cherry onesfor my tattoo artist‘s wife… It’s time for me to send some chocolate to Dita of BMEJapan, and see if she can’thelp me place an order!

Awww, isn’t that sweet!

As you probably know I have magnets inside my fingers, implanted courtesy of Steve Haworth (made by Jesse Jarrell and previously covered on BME). My magnets are mostly intended to be functional, to give me “magnetic vision“, but Steve and his partner Cookie recently opted for something far more romantic.

Each one got two magnet implants done; one in the fingertip, and the other behind the knuckle, positioned so that if they are holding hands, the magnets draw toward each other, linking them. It’s yet to be determined whether there will be a noticeable sensation or not (the magnets are very small), but on a purely symbolic level I really love it!

If you’re interested in something like this (or are an implant artist looking for silicone coated magnets), you can contact Steve via his website at stevehaworth.com.
