My Neighbour Totoro

Believe it or not, if you do a search for Miyazaki on ModBlog, you won’t get any results.  It’s time to change that.  While you may not know the name Hayao Miyazaki, you probably have seen, or at least heard of one of his films.  Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbour Totoro are just some of the films he has created over the past 40 years.  He’s even got two academy awards under his belt for best animated feature.  So to discover there hasn’t been a post mentioning his name is a little shocking.  Especially because of the memorable characters he creates.  Thankfully IAM: h0ly_frij0les is a huge Miyazaki fan and sent in this image of his My Neighbour Totoro tattoo to the cartoon tattoo gallery.  The artist is Lu Valdovinos from Exodus Ink in Summit, Ill.

Alright Miyazaki fans, I know you’re out there!  What’s your favorite Studio Ghibli film?  And don’t you dare say Grave of the Fireflies.  I don’t need to spend the rest of the day bawling in a corner.  There’s a reason it’s known as the saddest film ever.

  1. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Or Kiki’s Delivery Service. Kiki’s is pretty damn cute.

  2. I’ve got the start of a Princess Mononoke sleeve right now a piece running from my wrist to my ditch, hoping to get my upper arm completed by NIX to enter it in large colour. I adore Miyazaki’s work but I don’t think I could pick my favorite piece, I opted to go for a Mononoke sleeve cause it’s what introduced me to his work and I felt had the best representation for what I was going for.
My friend has a dog named Kiki after the film! haha =)

  3. Totoro definitely, I remember seeing it when I was six years old and it has been my all-time favorite animated movie ever since!

  4. Howl’s Moving Castle! I’ve seen that movie faar too many times.
I’m trying to educate my other halfs’ 19month old son on Ghibli movies…he loves Totoro :D

  5. WOOT! got featured.! favorite miyazaki film haaas to be spirited away or princess mononoke. i thought ponyp was hella cute too

  6. lu is amazing, one of the best up& coming artists out there. i love his work, this leg sleeve is ill!!!

  7. Fireflies is animated by studio ghibli, yes, but it’s no work of miyazaki’s.
i couldn’t watch ponyo because the english dub was pretty bad and i failed to get my hands on a decent sub.
i’d go with spirited away in any case. apparently lin is supposed to be a weasel spirit, which you never see in the movie. disappoint!

  8. Definitely Princess Mononoke, followed by Spirited Away.

Simply because it has yet to be mentioned, I have to say that The Cat Returns was also pretty good.
