Scar Wars 2007: John Joyce

Shawn Porter (scarwars.org) writes,

This weekend I was lucky enough to host piercer/Scarification artist John Joyce at my appointment only Xanadont Studios in always sunny Philadelphia. In between cuttings, I was able to spend some one on one time with him discussing the art, business and the state of the emerging Scarification Culture. John had a fascinating insight into the current school of cutters, and a few choice words of warning to the up and coming ranks inspired by some of the achievements of his generation. All in all, an amazing visit by a true professional. I highly recommend anyone interested in the ART and culture of Scarification to sit down with John and be prepared to listen, learn and laugh.

John Joyce will be cutting by appointment only at the SCARwars 2007 event in Philadelphia. Contact him for appointment availability and requirements.

Scars by Dave Gillstrap

I’ve posted Mandy (iam:kitten, cut by Dave) a few times before, but the reason I’m posting her today is that I saw a rather disconcertingly similar piece recently — which I should mention that the wearer insists was planned separately. It’s a really pretty design, so I suppose it’s no surprise that it would be duplicated eventually, but independent of debates about “plagiarism” versus “inspiration” versus “great minds think alike”, I like them both and hope that people are able to walk away without hard feelings on either side.

Ritual in a Rush

Stitch was in Atlanta and stopped by to see Max Brand (see also: play piercing from Max) at All Or Nothing Tattoo to do some play piercing (we recently posted the video)… The funny thing is that she had to catch a bus, so they had a one hour time limit from set up to clean up to get all fifty-six needles in and out. Click for a shot of the needles in.

“Only the best”

A while back I got this funny email from Jared —

well, it starts off pretty normal… my judgment was a slight bit impaired one night so i asked my two buddies to give me a heart brand on my arm. it just basically went downhill from there. they got the great idea to just simply use a lighter and try to shape the skin. bad choice. what ended up happening is they held the flame on the lighter for about five or so minutes, then pressed it to my skin (which i didnt really notice at the time) and they held it for about a minute or two. when that was done the lighter was removed… with about half of my skin, leaving me with my third degree “heart”.
