The Doktor is in

When it comes to comic book tattoos, the majority of them are created in the likeness of comic book characters.  Portraits, logos, etc.  It’s not too often we see someone get a tattoo that a comic book character has, which probably has to do with there not being too many tattooed comic book characters.  Well, Warren Ellis isn’t one to stick to convention, and his Doktor Sleepless character sports a bright green grinder tattoo on his back.  Now while Combatcow’s grinder isn’t green, it is a faithful recreation of Ivan Rodriguez’ artwork.

The optical illusion part of the tattoo is pretty awesome.  Sit back and look around the picture.  You should see the gears moving around on their own.

I must not fear

Fear is the mind killer

For those unfamiliar with the Bene Gesserit, or their litany against fear, that can only mean one thing; you’ve never had the chance to read Dune (or see one of the adaptations of Frank Herbert’s works).  That’s alright, you still have time to go out and pick up a copy of the book.  Now if you’re not so inclined to read the novel, you can at least appreciate the sentiment.  The purpose of the litany is to calm themselves and to ease their mind when faced with fear.  We all have some form of coping strategy when in a situation that instills fear or pain, be it meditation, anger, or running away as fast as possible.  Regardless of how you deal with fear, the first step is acknowledging it.  From there it is how your mind processes it that results in your behavior.  The purpose of this particular quote, and why it is so important to fans of the series, is that it isn’t a litany that denies the existence of fear, rather one where you can take control of your fear, face it head on, and come out the other side stronger for having stood up to your fear.

I’m not sure who the artist of this piece is, but it was done at Kawbi Tattoo, in Salem, Oregon, and it is the latest addition to the lettering tattoo gallery.

Tie-dyed

With Christmas only a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking of gifts for your loved ones.  Now when it comes to buying a gift for people, sometimes you can get stumped for ideas.  When that happens, most people just get something that doesn’t require much thought, like a gift card.  If a gift card isn’t your thing, you could always go simple and get your loved one a tie.  Even if they don’t wear a tie every day to work, there is bound to be some kind of occasion that necessitates wearing a tie, so giving one as a gift is always a safe bet.  The only way getting someone a tie could possibly go wrong is if they’re someone who found a way to never need a new tie ever again.

So, any ideas on what to get this young man for the holidays?

As for the tattoo, Ross Lloyd from Genx Tattoo in Cleveland sent in the photo along with a number of other pictures of his work.  This one in particular came from the geek tattoo gallery.

It’s-a-me! Mario!

Sure when he first appeared in Donkey Kong he was just a simple construction worker, but as time went on, he became the lovable plumber we all know today.  From his humble upbringing in New York, this Italian Stallion of a plumber quickly rose to the top of his profession.  As his success grew, he was able to take his brother Luigi under his wing and open up Mario Bros Plumbing.  Then one day, a call came in that would change the lives of the brothers forever.  While fixing a major plumbing emergency at a low-rise in Brooklyn, the brothers were sucked into a giant pipe trapping them forever in the mushroom kingdom.  To many this would be a disaster, but these plucky heroes took up the mantle of champions, and became the protectors of the land.  For over 20 years Mario and Luigi have been saving the lives of the residents of the kingdom, as well as providing the rest of us back in the real world a source of inspiration.

Take this tattoo for example.  As the start of a sleeve dedicated to Mario, it shows just how important this immortal plumber has become to the world he was stolen from all those years ago.

Mario!!

Beard Love

The mighty beard.  An ancient symbol of greatness, and the bold embodiment of all that is awesome.  With fall in full swing in the northern hemisphere, the time is nigh for all those who can grow beards to unleash the power that is the beard.  Bearduary is only a few months away, and you don’t want to be left with a bald face when the day of revelry is upon us.

To those unable to grow a beard, fret not as you can show your support to the beards around you in many ways.  Just look at this tattoo by Savannah Brayton from Washington, NJ.  This is a person who loves beards and isn’t afraid to hide it.

I <3 Beards

So men of ModBlog, start growing your beards now, and send in your photos.  Every BMEBoy in Bearduary will be sporting a beard, don’t be left out.  In the meantime, Movember is just around the corner, so if you’ve got a mustache, send in those pictures as well.  And to the ladies of ModBlog, if you’ve got some way of expressing your love of the beard, lets see it as well.

The Walking Gummies

Well, we’re almost halfway through October, which means we’re coming up on Halloween.  Of course this means that over the next few weeks expect to see a lot of horror-type pictures.

So to get things started off, we’ve got a tattoo that really shows just how prepared we must be at all times for the coming zombie apocalypse.

Gummy Brainsssssss

The Zombie Survival Guide warns us that we must always be vigilant, and that an outbreak can occur at any moment, anywhere.  Now I know there isn’t a chapter on zombie gummy bears, but after seeing this, I think everyone needs to be doubly aware of their surroundings, as even gummy bears can become one of the living dead.

DaniUndead sent in this picture of her new tattoo, which was done by Daniel Dagones from Beneath the Skin in Las Cruces, NM.  The full sized image, as well as some more pictures of it can be found in the geek tattoo gallery.

So, have you got something Halloweenish on you?  Send it in to BME and you may get featured this month in one of the many upcoming Halloween posts.

Tetris!!!

First, some theme music for the post..

Now, I’m fairly certain that at some point every single ModBlog reader has either played Tetris, or at least is familiar enough with the game to know how it works.  A long time ago, back when Nintendo wasn’t even available in North America, and the cold war was still raging on, a Russian game designer named Alexey Pajitnov invented a game that would revolutionize gaming as we knew it.

You see, this simple block dropping game ended up becoming one of the most popular games of all time.  So it was only natural that something so popular would end up as a tattoo.

tetris

This image from the New Skool gallery was sent in by Chriz, also known as Ta2head from Buxe Voll? Tattooz in Germany.  I couldn’t find out a lot about Chriz, but from what I understand he works out of Rostock and Neubrandenburg, as well as doing guest spots.  According to his description, this piece was done also freehand.

This is going to be the first of a series of posts on Chriz as he recently uploaded a number of exceptional pieces to the galleries.
