Teen angst has always been sexy

It may come as a surprise that the tiny island paradise of Micronesia is one of the leading teen suicide capitals of the world. This isn’t because it’s a depressing place to live or because of unpleasant social pressures (as you’d see, for example, in some northern Canadian Native communities) — it’s simply because it’s cool. It’s not uncommon to see a teen suicide after a minor breakup or an argument with ones parents, and some kids have even died just because they “wanted to try suicide”.

It started with the popular son of a prominent family. He had two one month old babies by different mothers, neither of which knew about the other. The stress caught up to him and he hung himself — and the two mothers met each other at the funeral. This “cool” suicide opened the door of acceptability, and this one death grew into an epidemic of unnecessary hangings.

Anyway, self cutting is of course a million times healthier than suicide, but many people still consider it a bad idea. I tend to disagree and actually consider it a good thing, but that’s not the point of this entry. What I do notice is that cutting has absolutely broken through into cool territory, and a sort of cutting chic is developing. Pictures are shared and the poetry of the pictures is as important as the first-hand sensation — it’s a form of therapeutic interactive and communicative performance art for teens (and adults) who want to share an emotional message.

Thanks to my friend SilverSweets for the first pictures in this entry, and also to Skimask for this “Mang Cutta” tattoo by Craig at Central in Thunder Bay.

Ascension Suspension Video

Steve Truitt from Ascension Suspension just emailed me their new video trailer. There’s lots of neat clips in this — tons of good looking performers with a lot of life in them, a human rotisserie, ass suspension, blood play, single hooks, tandem suspension, spinning beams, fire, and more. Great video from a great group.

Your next teen crush

I always love getting photos from Central and South America. Here’s some photos from my friends at Cutuvi Local‘s last SusCon in Brasil… Is it bad that I like seeing pretty girls suspend? I like seeing good looking guys suspending as well — it’s not a pervert thing, honest. But on the off chance that it is for any of you, I won’t tell.

Update: It’s yumegari in the photos if you want to say hello (nicely).

Do you like broken ankles?

I’ve seen some pretty silly mistakes in the suspension community from time to time… things like substituting venetian blind cord for parachute cord (there’s quite a strength difference between the two)… So at first glance I had a chuckle when I saw this wooden suspension rig imagining the tumble as it shattered under stress:

But I was too hasty with that laugh — Peter Sheringham over at Piercing Urge X in Melbourne, Australia has done his research. This is Mountain Ash Hardwood (write one if you want one), and may well be stronger than many of the metal rigs I’ve seen in use! You’ll also see it used in bows, hammer handles, and baseball bats. Oh, and as a point of trivia, this is from the tallest flowering plant in the world, and examples have been found that are even taller than the Pacific US coast’s redwoods!

An entry containing scars

They say once you go black you never go back, right? I can’t vouch for genital size, but I can tell you that when it comes to scarification I’ve seen some of the most stunning work on dark skin — this example, fresh and healed, is by John Durante of Laughing Buddha in Seattle, Washington.

It’s not uncommon to see pale skin actually heal indented rather than with a raised keloid. Here’s an example (four weeks old) by Rox in Kennewick, Washington.

On the off chance that’s a white power logo (which I don’t have any reason to believe), let me preemptively balance out my karma with a peace sign… And I’m sure you’ve wondered what an electrocautery brand on the palm of the hand looks like, right? Here’s a before and after from Shawn O’Hare at The Pain Parlor in Oxnard, California.

Speaking of unusual locations for scarification, here’s an ear brand by Matt Bruce:

Let’s see what else is in my scar folder to tell you about… here’s a big full back cross branding (healed) being play pierced. Photo c/o Kent Fazekas at Outer Limits in Long Beach.

Finally, we can’t forget scarification by body piercing! Here’s the result of a couple tries at a nape piercing (rejection)… as you can see they’ve moved on to new territory and haven’t given up yet!

Extreme Ironing, Hooker Style

You may remember that back in August I posted about “extreme knitting“. If you liked that, IAM:namesofthedead has also tried extreme knitting. I think when these photos came in to BME they were processed by Phil, who’s an avid unicycler and mentioned to me that extreme ironing is actually a sport. Well, here’s the suspension community’s contribution I suppose!

Outdoor suspension

Thanks to IAM:dragon for these suspension photos. Most suspension goes on in an urban environment, so I really like seeing these outdoor suspensions in really natural environments. Perhaps it’s my own prejudices speaking having grown up in the country, but I feel like the sense of peace that’s inherent in places that look like this must positively affect the suspension.
