Traditional tattoos in Phuket

Last week, ModBlog reader Ric sent an email to me, saying:

Thought you might be interested in some pictures I took in march from a vendor in a Mall in Phuket. His body was covered with traditional, very detailed, Thai tattooing. So far, I hadn’t had the chance of seeing such extensive work. In particular in a mall.

Thanks for sharing these Ric, this is definitely not something I’d see in a mall here.

N-Joy!

Last weekend we had a guy come into our shop who was a true character. His name was Nico Joy and his performing nickname was N-Joy (not to be confused with the g-spot stimulating adult toys by the same name). He came in and inquired about getting a tattoo, a decent sized stomach rocker with his name and below it “aka N-Joy”. He ended up not getting anything, explaining that he usually gets his work done in DC and that it is way cheaper.

At one point he showed us this tattoo as a reference for what he could get for “80 bucks and a 5 dollar tip” in DC, and I think it sums it up well.

Oh Swayze……

Last time we featured a tattoo on Modblog  that was a tribute of one of Patrick Swayze’s films, it payed homage to the film, Roadhouse. Personally, I would have preferred the next tribute piece we featured to be a classic Swayze film be dedicated to the movie Point Break, but since none have been submitted, I guess this will fill the void for now.

This tattoo is on Melle.Luka and was done in her actual handwriting by Mylooz in Brussels, Belgium.

Pirate Booty

My friend Emily, showed me this picture because she loved the tattoo. It’s not just Emily that loves this though, every single female I show this tattoo to seems to absolutely love it.

This tattoo on Yomee was done by Mimsy of Mimsy’s Trailer Trash Tattoo, which interestingly enough operates out of a 1959 qualicraft caravan trailer!

In keeping with fairness to the sexes, since I featured one of Yomee’s tattoos that all of my female friends loved, I suppose it is only right I feature Yomee’s self done tattoo that myself and all of my male friends seem to love.  To see that one though, you are going to have to keep on keeping on.

The bird king people eater

This interesting piece was only Jamie Mahood’s second attempt at realistic color work. To date she’s only been tattooing 2.5 years but her work definitely doesn’t seem like it came from a rookie artist. Perhaps that is due to the great tattoo lineage from which she learned. She apprenticed under Wes Grimm who is the great grandson of Bert Grimm. Jamie currently works at Suffer City Tattoo in Dallas, TX.

Only in a fluid sharing relationship…

…would it ever be considered ok to take out someone’s hooks, clean them off and then see what piercings of yours they would fit into.

Kevin, who submitted these pictures had this to say:

My girlfriend and I the day after her performance suspension in Columbus, OH for the band Only Flesh.  After lovingly massaging the air from her back and cleaning her shark hooks, I played around by putting the hooks in everything I could, like my 6g labret as seen here.  This photo seems to show a lovely middle-ground between my piercing/stretching obsession and her affinity for ink.  I’m so glad we share the same affinity for body modification 🙂  Photo by Samantha Hodges.

PS: I believe those shark hooks he refers to are actually salmon hooks.

If it wasn’t for this tattoo, dinosaurs may still roam the Earth

There was a big update to the beta.bmezine.com recently, so I have  plenty of picking for modblog to last me a while. Unfortunately, a stomach virus got the best of me today, so one post is all I am gonna be able to knock out. Hopefully, I will wake up over this damn illness tomorrow and can get back on track.

When it comes to concepts for back pieces, this definitely ranks amongst the most original and well executed I have come across. This tattoo by Alex Vidaud of Nautilus Tattoo depicts the mass extinction of dinosaurs. They have plans of continuing the scene down his butt and to the backs of his knees with prehistoric underwater ocean.

On a side note, this piece won an award at the ’09 Paradise Tattoo Gathering.

Another case of BLATANT tattoo thievery

Modblog has a history of calling bullshit on tattooist who blatantly rip off other peoples work and  use it as their own. In fact lots of you guys probably remember the modblog post from 2005 where Amina Munster’s chest piece by Tim Kern that was ripped off by another artist.

That seemed like a pretty blatant rip off, even with the subtle changes that were made to the original design. However, it pales in comparison to this atrocity.

When Cat Spencer came up with a beautiful Mucha inspired back piece for his lovely wife, Carla, she insisted on keeping the two shoulder blade pieces from her youth.  Well when a FAR less talented artist blatantly ripped off here design, he too incorporated Carla’s old shoulder pieces in his rendition!

This is the original rendition on Carla’s back…

…and this is the atrocious rip off of her same design, INCLUDING the old shoulder pieces.

Thanks to Lish for submitting this story to me. If you have news, stories, or photos you feel would make for a good modblog post. Please do not hesitate to email them to [email protected]
