“Summer has started in the Netherlands, so I’m wearing short sleeves and Dermablend on my hands and arms to cover my tattoos for work. It works sufficiently well, people notice that something is strange about the color, they may guess that it’s make up, but don’t know about the tattoos. Unless of course they ask about it, in which case I usually explain that it is to hide the tattoos, which is usually taken well.
What still shows are the bulges formed by paraffin injection to accentuate the female shapes of the tattoos (not advisable, I had bad experiences before, but anyway…). Their visibility is dependent on the way the light shines on it and the perspective, but they look pretty erotic to me even when covered.
People seem to avoid asking me what they are, but it is a bit on the fringe… freaky stuff!”

Facebook is not your friend
I seem to have a history of being blocked and chased off of sites, but I am also rather hard to silence, aren’t I?
A week ago, Rachel was up here in Toronto visiting our daughter, and while she was here I posted the following photo to my facebook wall, which had become a sort of “work safe” ModBlog where I shared the many interesting things that my friends there posted. As you know if you use Facebook, nearly every post or picture or message has a little button that says something like “Report This Photo”. What you may not know is that it only takes a single person clicking it to get your account banned from Facebook, and that there appears to be no human oversight or moderation to this process. Whether that means that it’s completely run by bots or it’s minimum-wage moderators mindlessly clicking “ok” all day long I have no way of knowing — all I know is that the process is broken. Anyway, here is the photo I posted while Rachel was here, the first one that got me in trouble, earning a one day ban for violating “community standards”:
Admittedly, it’s a “boobie” picture, so I’m not terribly surprised that some prude reported it. However, I censored the nipples, and in any case, on Facebook’s “community standards” page they explicitly state that they allow tasteful nudity and artistic nudity. Unforuntately Facebook provides no mechanism for disputing these bans, and even says “don’t bother asking us to lift a ban, because we never do even if it’s in error — just be patient”. There are no forms to contact them about this, so I spent some time reading news articles about similar bans — they’re quite common — and got the name of Andrew Noyes, a Facebook PR guy who’d dealt with this in the past, tracked him to his personal email address, and wrote him a letter asking him to help.
While I waited, I went out for an icecream with my daughter and Rachel and told them what had happened. Rachel went on a bit of a rant about how unfortunate it is that many modification artists are using Facebook as their primary home, because Facebook, to simplify what she said, “is not our friend”. Sure, they’re happy that we’re there posting our pictures and attracting eyeballs to generate advertising revenues for them, but don’t ever kid yourself into thinking they care about this community or will protect it in any way — let alone protecting larger civil rights like freedom of speech or privacy. They’ll do what’s good for their bank account, and that is a very different thing than what is good for the body modification community. Rachel told me that if I ever wanted to have a safe place to blog on the subject, that the doors of ModBlog were open to me. Since I still have a lot of hurt feelings and heartbreak about the way I stopped blogging here in the first place, I said thanks but no thanks, and anyway, blogging at Facebook, even though their platform sucks, is very easy and fast and makes it convenient to network with my friends, and since I’m just doing this just for fun these days I figured I’d stick with Facebook. This decision was solidified by getting an email from Andrew Noyes on my return saying the same throw-away line I’ve seen him use in the media — “It was an error and we apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.”
But in any case the one-day ban was off six hours later and I figured it was the end of my troubles and continued posting as normal. Everything seemed fine, until I posted the following image, along with a note about health and safety:
Now, before I continue telling my Facebook story, I’d like to put this picture into context, because there is more to it than meets the eye. Yes, of course all things being equal suspension should be treated with the same controls on sterility, safety, and cross-contamination as body piercing is. That goes without saying, and I can’t imagine there isn’t a person who disagrees. However, to speak by analogy, just because you agree that all things being equal people should wear condoms when having sex, it does not follow that you believe long-term partners must wear condoms, or that condoms are required in erotic art (aka pornography). If the photos on the “insane” half of the photo are in an artistic context between fluid-sharing partners, or people who are otherwise “safe” to contaminate each other’s blood, then the lack of gloves carries with it less additional risks and becomes more of a political issue than a safety issue (and of course with the free flowing blood on the practitioners in the top-right photo, gloves alone would not be an adequate precaution). Of course one could say “but what if someone copies that”, but really, my stance has always been that it is the job of BME — and people in general — is to educate and provide all available information, not to censor themselves for fear that people will blindly emulate without understanding the risks.
I’ve been talking to the performers in the bottom right photo, and I should mention first that they are artists, and not a suspension team — they do not suspend others. Everyone involved was tested for disease, and in any case, two of them are married partners. This was an art performance. It was not a suspension event. So the above montage at least in part compares apples and oranges — and while no one disagrees with the general message, it does it using the the wrong illustration, and thereby unfairly hurts people who are not part of the problem. Let me finish off this diversion by sharing with you the beautiful video of the performance so you can understand it in context, and perhaps take away the lesson that if you’re going to create an image like this (and there are many floating about), you should be very sure about the shots you include:

But in any case, I went out to a movie (myself watching Total Recall, and my daughter watching Wimpy Kid) and when I came back, I found that I was blocked from Facebook for this post “violating their community standards”, this time for three days. I have written to Andrew Noyes again, but unfortunately this time he has not — at least yet — stepped up to help. Now, I don’t believe Facebook specifically has it in for me, or for body modification. I think they simply couldn’t care less about us one way or the other, leaving us at the mercy of automated systems that boot us off or slap us with petty punishments the second some complains. I have been speaking out against rebloggers who simply repost pictures they steal from BME as their own, and I have been speaking out against tattoo blogs that objectify women needlessly — for all I know one of them is laughing all the way to the bank, having found an easy way to manipulate the system. Well, they’ve managed to push to somewhere that they can’t censor me. For now, I’m taking my writing to hear on ModBlog. Tattoo artists and piercers beware — all it takes is your competition making a few mouse clicks, and you’ll go through the same hell. Make sure you have a backup plan like BME, because, to again state the obvious, Facebook is not your friend.
I don’t have a good picture to go along with it, but the entry that I was about to post (but couldn’t) when I got back from the movie was about Total Recall… so let me share a picture of one of the iconic characters that is in both the original and the very different remake, and a hilariously awesome tattoo based on the final scene from the original.
The art direction and concept work in the movie is where it really shines, and that includes a few scenes of “body modification of the future” (which reminded me of Warren Ellis‘s superb future-mods comic “MEK”). In addition to three-boobed women, as the main character runs through a very Bladerunner-esque dystopian city, we see a tattoo artist working on a backpiece, as the whole thing flickers like electroluminescent wiring. In addition, some people have phones implanted in their hands (which from the surprise some street urchins show, is not yet commonplace among the general public) — we even get to see Quaid cutting it out of himself, pulling it out quite realistically as an implant would be, as it’s being used to track him. Anyway, it’s mostly an action movie and not a lot more, but there were many little details like that I think people here would appreciate.
So yeah… Screw blogging on Facebook. Even if they “fix this”, at this point I have no reason to believe it won’t happen again and again, eventually causing me to lose everything I’ve worked on. So I’m going to put my posts here instead. I’m not sure if I’ll start right away full-force or ease into it, but I can’t pour my efforts into posts that might mysteriously disappear because of some inaccessible behind-the-scenes process at a megacorporation. Finally, I want to say that I’m not here to “take over” ModBlog and I look forward to working with the others posting here and I appreciate having been offered a safe home to share my opinions on body modification, and a place to highlight the things I see and enjoy. Stay tuned I suppose?
P.S. I have kept copies of everything I have posted to Facebook, so since it’s effectively lost in their useless unsearchable interface, if there’s an interest, I may repost some of the “best of” material here so that it is properly archived for the body modification community to enjoy.
Another mind-boggingly awesome mod for the day…
In keeping with the theme from my last post, “mods that stir up a genuine sense of awesomeness for me”, I present to you Mason’s (who you may remember from this Modblog gem from the past ) deep chest “piercings”. I say piercing in quotes, because while these are opening in the skin filled with a piece of jewelry, the procedure to get them there (and healed) was FAR from a piercing.
When I first saw this picture on Tumblr, I shot Mason a message I wanted 2 things: a) a better photo of this mod and maybe some additional photos. b) his permission to post this on modblog. That little bastard never responded to me and I realized 2 things: a) this mod is so AWESOME that if all we can get is a homoerotic myspace mirror shot, then that’s what we will post! b) This is Mason, am I really waiting on permission from him?
Since I never got the full 411 from Mason, I am basing the following information on what he told me a long time ago, and my own theories so if anyone involved with this project wants to jump in and correct me, please do so.
These “piercings” started as subdermal implants done by none other than Brian Decker (if memory serves me correct). After the subdermals were allowed sufficient time to heal, they were removed which left behind a healed fistula. Then the entry and exit points for the new “piercing” were opened by Howie and teflon jewelry was inserted. (Thanks to Tony for correcting me on the implant to piercings steps). This left behind a piercing that would be nearly impossible to heal using traditional manners and a mod that I have only actually seen one other time…and that was on Fakir Musafar!
Noh, this is Kabuki
If you’re not familiar with Kabuki, or may have heard the term but never understood it, today is your lucky day. As a form of traditional Japanese theatre, Kabuki dramas are instantly recognizable by the distinct costumes and make-up the performers wear. Originally performed by all female casts, the practice was deemed too erotic, and women were banned from performing. Following the ban, the style continued on with all male casts, until further bans were placed on the actors as the young men playing the female parts were often used as prostitutes. Eventually both bans were rescinded, and the tradition carried on, and is still being practiced to this day.
With Kabuki theatre, the make-up the performers wear is called Kumadori, and is extremely important as it can instantly let the audience know what character is being portrayed. This sleeve that was sent in by IAM: MinusAll features a number of Kumadori make-up styles, including Dannosuke, Yakkodako, Modoibashi, Sukeroku, and Shoomaru.
The use of the make-up designs on what appears to be parchment, is a nice nod to the practice of having the designs posted backstage as a point of reference when actors are doing their own make-up.

…..Doug Malloy died.
Doug Malloy was the allias used by Richard Simonton. Richard Simonton was a married father of four. He was an executive with the Muzak Corporation as well as a founding member of the American Association of Theatre Organ Enthusiasts.
As Doug Malloy, he was heavily involved with the underground body piercing scene and was an integral part of bringing piercing to where it is today, via his many contributions to the industry.
The below text is from the BME Wiki:
As Doug Malloy, he was an instrumental supporter and patron of the early body modification scene. By 1975, he had published a short, largely fictional autobiography entitled Diary of a Piercing Freak under his assumed name, which was sold to a fetish publisher and released in softback under the title The Art of Pierced Penises and Decorative Tattoos. He had also established contacts amongst body piercing enthusiasts both in Los Angeles and on a global scale, including London tattooist Alan Oversby (better known as Mr. Sebastian), Roland Loomis (better known as Fakir Musafar), Viking Navarro, Sailor Sid Diller and Jim Ward. He was also an organizer and active member of the T&P Group, an association of tattoo and piercing enthusiasts based in Los Angeles.
The upsurge in interest in body piercing had created enough interest that Simonton advised Jim Ward, who had previously worked as a designer, that he should start a body piercing business. Simonton advanced Ward the money to start Gauntlet, originally a home based business, and Jim began to produce body piercing jewelry. Simonton’s experience as an amateur piercer formed the basis of the primitive techniques used at the time, and his network of contacts was instrumental in spreading the popularity of body piercing, especially genital piercing. By 1978 Gauntlet had a retail location and the world’s first body piercing studio was established. Doug also provided extensive notes that were ghostwritten by Ward into full articles for PFIQ, the first magazine devoted to the subject of body piercing, a Gauntlet publication.
One of Simonton’s other notable contributions to the development of body piercing in contemporary society was his pamphlet Body & Genital Piercing in Brief which is responsible for a large portion of the myths surrounding the origins of many piercings, most notably genital ones. Simonton’s personal enthusiasm for body piercing as an erotic practice and his love of the fantastic came together in this document, which is almost entirely fictional or highly speculative. Many of the theories regarding the practice and origins of various piercings historically have been distorted by the excellent circulation of this document or later documents which quote it.
If not for Doug Malloy’s enthusiasm for body piercings, we might have never had Gauntlet and without Gauntlet we might have never had professional piercing studios. So let’s take a few minutes out of our day to remember where we came from and pay respect where respect is due.

Interview with James Keen; a young, heavily modified, eunuch.
I first talked to James several years ago. At the time he was a minor seeking answers to questions about heavy mods. In all honesty, I didn’t take him too seriously. I foolishly lumped him in with several other young modders that seemed to be more into the fantasy of obtaining heavy mods than the reality of doing so. In fact, I distinctly remember some photo editing of mods onto a picture of his face at one point which made it truly seem as if it was all just fantasy for him.
However, as years passed, it became obvious he was totally serious with his desires and he began to get all the mods he had previously spoken with me about.
Several years ago, he interviewed me for the now defunct youngmodders.com. Now it is time for me to turn the tables and interview him. So without further ado, I give you a conversation with the now 26-year-old James Keen.
Sean: So, James, tell us how you first got interested in body mods.
James: Funny thing how it all started, I had desire for things like castration and face tattooing at an early age BUT what got me started was me and my friends sitting around listening to the band Korn. This is when they released the album Life Is Peachy I believe. We were sitting around listening to Korn all day and I saw my friend’s poster of the lead singer and noticed he had 3 eyebrow rings. At the time I was about 15 years old. We were all chicken shit to even venture off into piercing even though I secretly wanted to be castrated.
A few days went by and the more I saw the poster, the more this primitive urge in me said “get your eyebrow pierced!” I admit, for me it was a big step, one that would change the outcome for me on everything. Including castration and the works. At the time I believe you had to be 16 with parental consent. But I knew I needed it, the urge was bad. The more I thought of it, the more I wanted it. We all had a mutual friend who knew a guy who did piercings for minors. This is obviously a no-no for anyone out there. Get pierced the right way! But for me, I took the risk. I went in, paid him 20 dollars and he had piercing needles. He even opened one up in front of me with a new pack of jewelry. At the time things seemed clean, but looking back there were obvious signs I shouldn’t have gotten it. But I don’t regret it.
He then pierced my eyebrow at a 16 gauge. My parents saw, raised hell, and we had The Long Talk. To my surprise they said if I waited until I was 16 they would consent for a simple piercing. I kept the eyebrow for a year before moving on.
Sean: And move on you did! By far the most attention grabbing modification you have is your extensive facial tattooing, why don’t you tell us about those pieces.
James: Facial tattoos go back to me being a kid. I’m sure as kids we all painted on ourselves to look different or for fun. I remember seeing a magazine where a tribesman had designs tattooed on his face. I thought that was just beautiful. As a kid I then started painting my face, but to my disappointment it washed off. Then later I moved on to markers and pens and whatever I could get my hands on. My parents could not figure out why I was doing it. To me it felt… natural! Later on I would end up with my face covered in tattoos. It started off with me testing the waters, a spur of the moment tattoo. On my forehead I had a bullet hole wound tattooed, Which has since been covered up. On my one cheek I had a color organic bio-mech piece, the other a black and grey rotting jaw reconstruction. Later I added line work for my chin which is an eye with tentacles. And my bullet hole was covered up by skulls and bio-mech type style work.
The cheeks represent a yin yang type thing, the color organic is to show people I am beautiful, I am nice and forgiving, and I have a good heart. The other cheek is to show that even though I’m good I still have bad in me like most do. The eyes and worm in it show I am human and my bad is a fault that will watch over me and feed on me until the day I die. The forehead piece actually is like a crude crown of skulls to show my imperfections. And the line work with tentacles holds everything together with the eye watching over all of me.
Sean: To an outsider, the facial tattoos would seem like the most life changing modification you have. However, knowing that you have been castrated, a modification which changes you chemically as well as just aesthetically, I would presume that is your biggest life changing mod. How did the desire to become a eunuch come about and how has life changed since the procedure?
James: At a young age and honestly, the motivation actually started with me wanting to be genderless. The feeling that I am not a male or female. At the time, I felt like my penis and testicles mostly didn’t belong. Though I never thought of just coming out and cutting them off. It was more of, “I do not like these, how can I rid myself of it?” This went on for years until I hit puberty. Then I really hated it. The sex drive is one thing I didn’t care for. Oddly enough I was having sex only to ease the craving I would get from the testosterone produced from my testicles. I then remember watching something about gender reassignment surgery. And then it hit me, maybe I could get my testicles removed and penis! At the very least my testicles!
I was young and for years I struggled with it. I felt like I was the only one. I then came across a site called the Eunuch Archive. And realized I wasn’t so alone. People have and wanted to get what I wanted. Most were going to surgeons to get this goal accomplished. It was then I learned full genital removal was like the city of gold, very few find it. So I made things reasonable for myself. Get castrated, and get it done so I could rid myself of what I was cursed with. In all honesty, I should have gone to a surgeon, but I didn’t. Instead I sought out a Cutter. It took a long time, but I found one. Once again I was faced with taking a chance, and I took it.
The cutter I will not reveal, or where it was done. However, I will say he only required the supplies to do the procedure with. He did the procedure, left a stint in for draining purposes and sealed the scrotum up. I remember as my second testicle was being clipped from the body, it was an experience I won’t forget! The feeling of YES it is finally done! I remember it all like yesterday. Months after, and I’m talking 3-4 months of not taking testosterone shots or anything, I started getting hot flashes. Basically going through what a woman does in menopause. After that I no longer have them, life is good. My body hair is finer than it used to be. I can say I no longer want my penis gone, Ill keep it only because now I can tell castration really made me the person who I was supposed to be. My only worry now is osteoporosis.
Sean: I know that you didn’t go into the castration alone, you did it with your then partner, luvpain. How was this relationship?
James: My relationship with luvpain was up and down, not his fault. Its just I had jealousy problems which put strain on our relationship. We shared everything, including castration. Once we were both castrated, sex died down greatly which was okay. We started to cuddle more, kiss, caress and for fun I would do sexual things to him just to see if I could make another eunuch get off. Sorry for the blunt image. He is a wonderful soul and I feel ashamed of how I treated him since he has passed on. After that, I was actually in a relationship with a girl. Which is super odd. At first she was like how can we make this work if you don’t use your penis? I gave mostly oral sex and it lasted a while. Until she wanted me to move with her, I couldn’t do it. So we parted ways and I told her I hope she has a fulfilling life.
I have no preference sexually. I love both women, men, transgendered and what not. Even genderless people. For me a penis or vagina doesn’t matter. I look beyond that. As a eunuch, I think I can.
Sean: You have also removed your nipples, how did this mod fit into the overall plan?
James: Well the motivation for my nipple removal was simple, I wanted a Ken Doll-like effect. Unlike my castration nipple removal was purely cosmetic. I remember getting both done and keeping the nipple skin as a souvnir. I cannot remember what happend to it afterwards though.
Sean: Trophies like that do tend to get lost over time. So you want a modded “Ken doll,” does this mean you have, or plan on getting a full penectomy?
James: I dont, I wish. I been trying to get a penectomy for years now. All I have is castration, a subincision and a head split.
Sean: “All I have”, haha, that is one way of looking at it! So is the penectomy on the long term plan? Are you just looking for a practitioner?
James: Penectomy is definatly still the plan, I once said that castration may suit me but I do want a penectomy. It’s who I am. I am not the type of person who wants a deep penectomy, one flush to the body will do me just fine. Getting a penectomy is like finding the lost city of gold, it exists possibly but very hard to get to.
Sean: Judging by what we have spoken about, and the pictures you submitted, you are extremely modified. Aside form the penectomy, are you done, or are more major modifications in your future?
James: As far as major mods go, I want a full body suit tattoo. I have a back piece going on with a full torso piece coming up. I want my left pinky tip amputated but that is to be decided. I have an amputation fetish. There is something about amputees, especially small digit amputations that really gets me going. Its more of a sexual thrill. I think a pinky tip missing is not only aesthetically pleasing but sexy at the same time. So it would only be in due time I would want the same beauty of what it offers unto myself.
Sean: I assume you have you seen the toecutter videos on BME?
James: I have! I actually have! It was something to see too! For me watching the toecutter videos is equivalent to a normal guy watching porn! I know it sounds strange, but like I said before, small digit amputation gets me going. I remember seeing him using a chisel on one of his fingers. It was amazing, beautiful and erotic! Sean: I imagine your mods have a huge impact on your day to day life, but what is your daily life like outside of the mods?
James: Well I work from home, pretty uneventful. Then I also have a second job which pays minimum wage. Washing dishes and cooking at a independent restaurant in my town. Lucky for me they know me and gave me a job and I work in the back where no one sees me. Then there is video games. I love video games. I actually own three video game consoles, the Nintendo Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360. Tons of games, and an HDTV to get the best out of my gaming experience. I also meditate heavily, I tend to meditate in calm environments.
Sean: One last thing, I distinctly remember you from is your work on youngmodders.com. Since most of our readers probably won’t be familiar with that site, why don’t you tell them a bit about it.
James: I remember youngmodders.com WOW I was young then! I remember when Shannon was running things and I came to him with ideas, he seemed to think it was a good one and set me up with a site. The idea was to have young modified people run a site for those who were younger. A place for discussion and without judgment. I did say that once you reach I believe age 18 or over, you pass the torch to another young modder to take over. Many people do not know I was involved in that, me and another fellow. It was a highlight of my life that I still hold high in regards.
