Don’t Masquerade

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The last time we saw Cole up there, he was showing off that handsome chest piece, and understandably so! This time around, however, his clothes have tragically disappeared somehow, though this calamity at least allows us a convenient vantage point of the cephalopodic addition to his side by Jay at Trigger Happy in Vancouver, British Columbia. After the jump, we get a better look at a few things that are mildly obscured in the above photo.

How to Build a Boat

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

As part of our ongoing effort to bring you the absolute best in both knuckle and cephalopod tattoos, here’s some hand-work by Asa Rogers at Art With Heart in Denver, Colorado. It’s common knowledge that I can’t help but find endearing stylistic mishmashes, and this Asian lettering/”Book Worm”/sea-creature battle just plain does it for me. (The brilliant coloring doesn’t hurt.)

And before anyone pipes in with a worry or complaint that they either (1) already have “Book Worm” on their knuckles or (2) were planning on getting it and this just ruins their day…cheer up. If there’s a fine club of which to be a part, I think this would be it. On that note, what’s everybody reading this summer? Let’s hear your recommendations, ModBloggers. Oh, and of course, the other hand of above set is conveniently placed after the jump.

Struck the Hour

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

And here we have a fine rendering of what I can only assume the final days of World War III will look like, once society as we know it has crumbled and all that remain are the giant squid and steampunks, fighting for a world no longer worth living in.

(”The squid and the ship are based on one of my own illustrations,” says the wearer. “I sent the rough to Russ (Abbott) and two days later I was getting it done in one sitting whilst leaning over a fold out metal chair (at the Boston Tattoo Convention). Gotta love conventions for that. If I had been in Georgia, it would have been over a month waiting period to get it down.”)

Ten People at a Time

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

And so here we revisit three pieces of ModBlog history: (1) tattoos by Jason Stephan, (2) my utter inability to tell apart cephalopods, and (3) glorious animal warfare! This time around, we’ve got a giant squid an octopus throwing down with a damned murderous shark, right there in the ocean, as pirates look on furtively, waiting. Really though, Jason Stephan is just killing it lately.

Let Me Do My Job

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

The last time we saw Bloodlessness, she was getting her tongue split and inspiring typically wonderful Photoshop debates. This time around? Just munching on a squid. Just because. Got a problem with that? She doesn’t. Big deal. One squid.

Wet and Squidgy in the Middle

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

We showed off Babylovedoll yesterday in all her orange glory, and today it’s a pleasure to start the day with this piece, described only as “orange,” by Terry Ribera, who’s been splitting his time between Avalon Tattoo II in San Diego, California, and Daredevil Tattoo in New York City. It’s pretty easy for bio-mech stuff to end up looking samey, but Ribera’s work is so damn solid it’s pretty hard not to appreciate. What can I say? I’m a sucker for citrus-powered limbs.

Man vs. Wild

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

“Hey, I’m here for my consultation.”

“Oh, hey. Have a seat, have a seat. So, what do you have in mind?”

“Well, there are certain elements I’d like involved. A bear, for one.”

“Cool! We’ll get a bear in there. Anything else?”

“A squid.”

“A squid and a bear? Ha ha, sure thing man!”

“Also, we’re going to need a alligator in there. Oh! And a shark.”

“So this is some sorta wildli—”

“And there has to be a guy killing all of them.”

“At the same time?”

“At the same time.”

(”A man punching through an alligator, stepping on an octopus, having a bear in a headlock, getting attacked by a shark, and killing a man with his teeth” by Caleb at Studio City Tattoo in Studio City, California.)

I Got Pretty Close

Monday, December 15th, 2008

We’ve featured this particular beefcake before, and I mistakenly identified him as having been carved out of granite by Jesus. This was false, and I apologize for this mischaracterization. In fact, he was installed at the bottom of the sea over 60,000 years ago, by aliens, and occasionally surfaces to assert his dominance over killer whales and giant squid and underwater volcanoes and the like. He is literally standing in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in this picture, on top of a shark that had been alive since the Cretaceous period, which he killed just by looking at it. When asked for comment, he kindly shooed us away, as his mouth was full of Loch Ness Monster meat and he didn’t want to be rude.

Revenge of the Nerds!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I promised you more geek related (ok, some of them are just beautifully nerdy) tattoos, and here they are!

I got the Tetris tattoos first because I’m a huge Tetris nerd. Afterwards I realized it only made sense to add some Mario-ness since the only games I know how to play are Tetris and Mario :P. I went with Mario III because that’s what I play most often (it’s on my Gameboy which I keep in my bathroom). The Tetris pieces are staying unfilled and the Mario will all be colored and another half dozen pieces added as well as some background.

By the way, the third photo is her armpit.

Tattoo Keyword Galleries on BME

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Sorry for no posts today! I’ve been fiddling with software. On the backend, my image processing software now tells me about your current memberships, so hopefully now I won’t be granting any more secondary memberships that are shorter than the one you already have! I know that’s got to be very annoying.

On the frontend, I’ve been playing a little with my long promised “auto-keywording” utility for BME… I’ve installed it in the tattoo section. The “next/prev” links at the top are broken right now for multi-word galleries but that’ll be fixed tomorrow, and everything else should work. I think it’s quite fun, and gives a new way to explore the galleries… For example, there are now galleries for:

Remember, some of the top ‘<<’ and ‘>>’ links will be broken until tomorrow.

And, to illustrate this entry, a tattoo I’ve been meaning to feature for some time, Tyler’s “Bloody Hanya” (like the shirt), a BME logo designed by Johann, with blood by me!
