Suspensions in Oslo

This video was shot by my friend Bastian (on a cheap $99 camera) during the Oslo Suscon and and I hope it gives you an idea of how beautiful the atmosphere is during a suspension. Bastian also sent me the following to go with the footage..

The chap suspending is Morten, he’s Norwegian and was part of the crew at the Oslo event. He’s been featured on ModBlog before although he wasn’t named (he’s the guy on the right), anyway he was contemplating a two point chest suspension but changed his mind at the last moment and decided he’d like to do a two point resurrection instead! He went up on Håvve’s back (unfortunately I didn’t capture that on video – it was amazing, as if it were nothing. He just leaned on Håvve’s back and was lifted from there in no time at all!

This was so incredible to watch that I thought “Hey, let’s try this too” and decided to cut down to two hooks at the end of my own suspension. Alas, I didn’t manage to let go of the rope because it was just too intense and painful for me.

7th Annual Oslo Suspension Convention

For the seventh year in a row, Wings Of Desire brings us their Oslo SusCon. Håvve Fjell and Christiane Löfblad facilitate suspensions for a growing number of individuals each year, and are setting new records each year for their event — both in the sheer number of participants and suspensions, as well as the nations represented at their convention. The 80-plus attendees hail from 14 different countries around the globe, with an astonishing 67 suspensions predicted.

In addition to providing access to suspensions themselves, WoD conducts workshops to encourage the development of safe suspension practices in a friendly environment. WoD has given their workshops in Norway, Sweden, Poland, Brazil and Italy, and works closely with the annual Italian SusCon.

The SusCon runs from July 18-20, with a BBQ/afterparty on July 21. It’s an honor to be invited to participate at the upcoming convention and I look forward to seeing you there!

Learning to Fly

For those of you unfamiliar with Wings of Desire, they’re one of the world’s finest suspension teams and hosts to The Oslo SusCon.  Håvve and the rest of the gang are always at the forefront of modern suspension and now they’re about to do something that hasn’t been accomplished in many years, and that is publish a book on suspension.  Now in order for the book to be published, a minimum number of pre-orders need to be made.  The book, featuring the photography of Helene Fjell, is a chronicle of the past 10 years that Wings of Desire has been together.  Here’s a bit more about the book.

The book has been a long term project; planned since the very beginning of the Norwegian chapter in suspension history. Helene, our photographer, has been present since Håvve first came out as a Fakir in 1991 and has followed his work for more than two decades. As our official photographer, most of the body suspensions facilitated by Wings of Desire (WoD) can be found in her archives.

Helene’s photographs show more than the beauty of suspended bodies, they also capture the emotion of the moment. There are also a multitude of stories belonging to the people depicted. To give a slight impression of their various feelings and experiences, we have included selected quotes from people who have been suspended by Wings of Desire.

The foreword is written by Håvve’s first mentor, Allen Falkner. The history and philosophy behind WoD practice is put into words by the Norwegian suspension pioneer and creator of WoD, Håvve.

Instead of choosing a publisher, we have decided to publish this book ourselves. We know that we have the experience and ability to make this book a striking visual and emotional testimony—as well as an historical artifact of a decade’s worth of continuous improvement of equipment and technique. What we need is your help to make it happen!

Wings of Desire have partnered with a Kickstarter-like site for independent authors.  What this means is that all the funds that go directly into the creation of the book, with nothing being tacked on by a publisher.  The down side to this is that in order to be published, they need to sell 500 pre-orders by May 7th.  So if you’re interested in getting a copy of what is sure to be an incredible book, head on over to this site to order your copy.

Congratulations Rolf!!!

This morning Guinness announced some new world record holders and among them was none other than Rolf Buchholz.  Rolf now has the distinction of being the world record holder as The Most Pierced Man in the World.  With a grand total of 453 piercings (278 of them being genital piercings), Rolf piercings are extensive and impressive.  What the Guinness record people didn’t mention is that Rolf has been tracking all of his suspensions, and has taken a total of 998 hooks since his first suspension in 2004.  Last month at the Oslo Suscon, Rolf marked his 100th suspension with a 100pt superman.  Rolf is a wonderful member of the BME and Suspension communities and we at BME would like to congratulate Rolf on this distinct honor.

Olso lounging

It’s always fun to see Arseniy from #Leeds Airlines (Russia) suspend.  He’s behind the scenes of so many fantastic suspensions, it’s good to see him get up.  This suspension took place at Oslo Suscon, and was facilitated by an all-star cast of practitioners.  With the help of Havve from Wings of Desire (Norway), Matt “Superboy” Kirk from Skindependant (New Zealand), and Lari from Finland, Arseniy went up in a 3 point, 1 knee, 2 elbow suspension that he then transferred into a single point knee.

4 hookers, 1 hook

Here’s another photo of the shenanigans that transpired at the recent Oslo Suscon. With help from Wings of Desire, Stanislav from the Moscow based Sinner Team hangs from a single hook while his wife Elena and two other women all hang onto him.  You can see Håvve in the background keeping a close eye on the hook.  Having seen that look on his face, while holding that flashlight, I can tell you that if anything were to have happened he would have been on top of it in an instant.  Thankfully everything went well and we’ve got the photos to prove it.

One Hundred

Anyone who has been to a Suscon event around the world knows Rolf.  He’s always on hand taking fantastic photos, and at some point will get up and suspend as well.  Rolf is also really diligent when it comes to tracking his suspensions, as you can see by taking a look at his IAM page.  Well for the 10th annual Oslo Suscon Rolf celebrated his 100th suspension by suspending from 100 hooks for 100 minutes.  Following the suspension he was awarded a gold plated hook.  Everyone here at BME wants to congratulate Rolf for this amazing accomplishment, and we’re looking forward to seeing the next 100 suspensions.

I’ve also included a video of the entire suspension from start to finish, you can check that out after the break.

The Oslo Suscon is hosted each year by Wings of Desire.

The gang’s all here

When it comes to free fall suspensions, the Sinner Team has it down to a science.  This being one of the most dangerous suspensions, it’s best not to even think of attempting it unless you’ve done a LOT of homework and have a lot of experience not only with suspensions, but with rigging and rope climbing.  With Stanislav and Elena having taken the plunge, the rest of the team lined up for their own turns jumping off the bridge.

Now, they haven’t sent in any photos of the crew’s jumps, but they have put a copy of the trailer for their free fall suspension film online.  The film is set to premiere at Oslo Suscon, so those of you attending, be sure to keep an eye out for it.  I’ve also got a video in my inbox from Stanislav that I haven’t had a chance to look at yet, but when I do I’ll be sure to upload it to BME so everyone can check it out.  In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
