MMMBrains

Today’s Halloween inspired pic comes from BME’s resident Hanson expert, IAM: ilovehanson, who you might recall had her knuckles tattooed in tribute to the band.  Ilovehanson, and her boyfriend IAM: Adrian, recently attended the Lawrence KS, zombie walk, and from the pictures it looks like they had a great time amongst the walking dead.

You can check out another picture of Adrian in the big nostril gallery.

Keep sending in those Halloween pictures.  We’re less than 20 days away from the best holiday of the year!

Who needs Bluetooth?

With laws being written all over the world banning the use of cell phones while driving unless a hands free device is being used, Bluetooth technology is everywhere.  In fact it has come to the point where it plays a regular role in the daily habits of a large portion of the commuting population.  As great as the technology is, especially with how many lives it has the potential to save, there are still some people out there looking for alternatives to using a Bluetooth device.  In fact, one such method was uploaded to BME by Kanji just the other day.

See, you don’t need a Bluetooth device if you’ve stretched your lobes, but I’d assume you’d need your phone to have voice activated dialing as it might be tough to hit all the buttons with it that close to your face.

People of Walgreens

Walmart seems to have a monopoly on the crazies when it comes to shoppers.  Ok, maybe not crazy, but eccentric, as evidenced by the many images on the people of walmart website.  Now while Walmart may be the place to go to when you want to see someone walking around in an outfit created entirely of stuffed animal skins, Walgreens seems to be the place you go when you want to see attractive modified people.  If you happened to be in one recently, you may have had the opportunity to see a pretty girl like IAM: Whitney strolling down the aisle.

IAM: Whitney

Earlier in the week some people were asking what happened to the BME boys and BME girls posts on Fridays.  I don’t know the status of the calendar posts, or the regular weekly column, but what I do know is that I personally don’t see why I should save the pictures of attractive people just for Fridays, but that’s just me.

As for Whitney’s picture, it popped up in the stretched lobe gallery this morning, so I’d imagine this picture is fairly recent.

Sometimes bigger is better

IAM:Twosteps sent in this shot of himself the other day, and unless I’m missing something it looks like he’s managed to stretch all of his piercings above the neck.

twosteps

I know that the concept of “bigger is better” has been discussed on ModBlog recently, but in the case of Twosteps here, he shows off that for him, bigger is definitely better.  When it comes to stretching out any piercing, there’s a degree of commitment made towards an eventual goal.  I use the term commitment because the act of stretching is a long and involved process.  Of course it can be sped up at points with the assistance of a skilled practitioner, but over time there is only so much outside assistance one can get.  In the end it takes both mental and physical commitment to the goal for it to be realized.  So in addition to the time it takes to stretch something out, there is also the need for patience, because we all know what can happen if a stretching is rushed.

Thankfully for Twosteps here, it looks like everything is going well on his part.  I don’t know if he’s done with everything or not, but the matching jewelry, combined with the placementof the piercings, really make the big piercings look great on him.

Fallout Love

It’s always nice to see a couple happily in love.  Of course with every relationship troubles can arise, it’s just how you deal with these that will get you through them.  Being prepared also helps.  Knowing each other well enough to get you through the toughest of challenges can make a relationship even stronger.  I’m not talking about fights between the couple, although those would be included, I’m thinking of the big life problems that can arise, sometimes when they’re least expected.  Loss of a job, unexpected pregnancy, nuclear fallout, basement getting flooded, car breaking down, and more are all the things life can throw at a couple at any time.  This is why it’s always nice to appreciate the little things.  Those little moments you share with your partner when the rest of the world doesn’t matter.  Sometimes it could be something as simple as a shared love of something.  Take this young couple, it’s obvious that they love each other, but they’re showing just how prepared they are for what life can throw at them, even if it’s a nuclear winter.

masks

So while we can all hope to not have to live through a scene from the Fallout series of video games, it’s nice to know that if the world is coming to an end, that the love these two have for each other will surely carry on.  If anyone knows who the happy couple is, please let me know so I can give them the proper credit.

As for their tattoos, you can get a better look at them in the new skool tattoo gallery

Update:  The photo is of IAM: NickFriederich and his lovely wife Chae.  Head on over to Nick’s IAM page to take a look at the rest of the pictures from the photoshoot.

Checkmate

A few months back Jen posted a picture that got more than a few mouths watering.  Well it turns out the young man in that image, IAM: Arseniy Andersson is so much more than a pretty face.  While we all appreciate his modelling pictures, back at home in St. Petersburg, Russia he is also known for being a piercer and performance artist.  I’m not entirely sure of the story behind these images, but from what I can tell Arseniy threw the hooks for what appears to be some form of photo/video shoot.

checkmate1

Of course the question is, was the chessboard part of the shoot, or was it just something being used to kill time?  Photos of suspensions always seem to capture such fantastic moments.  I suppose when you know the subject isn’t going to be going anywhere, the photographer can really set themselves up for a beautiful picture.  So while it may be a couple suspended tandem over a stream, or a good looking guy playing chess while in an abandoned warehouse, the opportunity for an interesting image is always present.

Keep on reading to see a closeup of the man playing black.

If you want to check out more great images of people suspending, head on over to the suspension galleries and check them out.

While you do that, here’s a question to ponder:  If you could do any activity while suspending, what would it be?

Stretching yourself to the limit

Be free all worthy spirits, and stretch yourselves, for greatness and for height.

–George Chapman

Today I’ve spent a bit of time focusing on the work of the artists that make up our community.  Specifically the works of one artist, but the idea is there.  What doesn’t get discussed a lot on ModBlog is the DIY aspect of the modification community.  Now the DIY modification enthusiasts range from the simplest of piercings, to some of the hardest modifications and play sessions that are covered by BME.  Due to the nature of the broad spectrum that DIY covers, it is impossible write a post about every aspect without getting complaints from people about writing the longest ModBlog post ever.  What I do hope to do is feature DIY stories more frequently as there are a tremendous amount of photos of  DIY modifications in pretty much every category of photo.

For today, I thought it would be nice to go with something simple.  Now the headline may be a bit misleading but it will make sense if you follow along.

So, what would you say is the most popular form of DIY modification?  In all honesty, I don’t have any numbers to back me up, but I think a safe bet would probably be lobe stretching.  I think it is safe to say that the majority of people with stretched lobes have at some point performed the stretching themselves, probably without even realizing that they were adding their names to the list of DIY modified people.

A lot of what makes the DIY movement so significant is that it is taking the next step in control over the body.  While everyone getting mods is doing it for their own personal reasons, they all are in essence changing their bodies to what they want, primarily through the help of practitioners.  What DIY means to many is the opportunity to make the changes that they want but by their own hands.  This means that by performing any mod by yourself, you are singlehandedly pushing the limits of control you have over your body, changing it to what you want it to be.

One person in particular who was kind enough to send in an image of a DIY modification is IAM: tiny.vertebrae.

tiny.vertebrae

From what I can tell, it appears she’s using a piece of wood to stretch out her own lobes.

So while lobe stretching is fairly common when it comes to DIY modifications, it is still a process that is being undertaken by those who are choosing to modify themselves under their own power.  I know someone is thinking it, and yes this isn’t the limit in which a lobe can or has been stretched, but in the moment captured in the image, the stretching is pushing the limits of what came before.

Be still my beating heart

Sometimes the daily grind can be overwhelming.  Work, family, friends, bills, kids, and more can all be a joy at times and a curse at others.  While we’re all flying through space on this spinning top we call home, sometimes it can feel great just to stop everything and be still.

To everyone the act of being still can mean many things.  To some it is a form of release, allowing the stresses of the world flow out of their bodies.  For others stillness can evoke feelings of anxiety, the calm before the storm as it were, the moment where everything just seems too good to be true.  Even in nature stillness can have many meanings.  Those early moments at dawn when a lake is perfectly still, just existing waiting for the world to begin again and reflect itself in its surface, the stillness of the night before still echoing across the glassy surface in the form of the mists.  Then there are the predator and prey.  The predator stalks its prey until it finds the perfect position to mount its attack, holding everything in and becoming a rock, immovable yet capable of motion.  The waiting, the thinking, becoming so still with focus that the rest of the world falls away.  While the predator waits, the prey becomes still as well, not with calm or focus, but with fear.  Knowing there is danger around and that the slightest movement will set in motion a cascade of events that could be the end of its existence.

The stillness of the world cannot exist without the movement.  The time after the world has stopped.  The first fish leaping from the water to eat an insect, causing the first waves to break the surface, waves that will continue to move until the next morning when the cycle begins again.  The moment where the stillness has fulfilled its purpose and the time to act is present, releasing all the energy locked within in one swift and sudden movement.  When the fear changes from the overwhelming power to be still, to the realization that by remaining still will be the end, and movement is what is necessary to survive.

Looking at this photo of IAM: Radical Kiba, you can see the stillness in her.  Lost within herself she is looking out on the world.  There’s no way to know how she is feeling, but you can feel the stillness.

kiba

What is stillness to you?  Is it the calm of the water at dawn, the anticipation of the predator waiting to strike, or is it the fear of the prey?  Or is it something else, something that only you can feel?

Being heavily modded is a disease?

First, watch this video until the end.

This ad, designed by Zeitsprung Commercial in Germany got sent to me last night by ModBlog reader Broodje.  For those that can’t watch the video at work, allow me to sum it up for you.  A man dressed in a bear costume is walking around the streets to cheerful music giving out hugs to people as he strolls along.  Then, the lighting darkens as the man in the costume pulls off the bear’s head to reveal his heavily modified face.  The tagline of the ad appears as he roars at the camera and stalks away:  ”You can’t see H.I.V.  But you can prevent it”.

I’m not sure how you may react to this, but I’m on the same page as Broodje, in that we’re both more than a little upset by the implications that this PSA gives off.  While the message itself is a good one, the end result may be giving a lot of people a bad impression of the modded community.  To me this is saying that not only can you get H.I.V. from a hug, but that someone who is heavily modified is probably infected and it is best to stay away from them.

As for the actor in the bear costume, I have no idea if he knew what the PSA was for, or if it mattered to him how he would be portrayed in the final cut.  The fact remains that as much as we try to show the world that modded people aren’t any different from the rest of the world, things like this come along and tap into some base fear that people have of the unknown, setting any progress that has been made back in the process.

I think what troubles me most about this, is that this type of thing is exactly the reason that Jessie had such a huge media circus around his arrest.  The media is consistently associating heavily modified people with as many negative connotations as they can.  Now we’ve come to a point that not only are heavily modified people scary because they’re “all violent”, but they “all have H.I.V. and should be avoided at all costs”.

What do you think?  Am I reading too much into the ad, or is there really an undercurrent in the media that is directly attempting to demonize a group of people just because they choose to take control of their bodies.

UPDATE:  It turns out that this video was part of the 2009 HIVisible campaign, and is starring none other than BME’s own IAM:Sicko.  So it appears I was completely off base with my interpretation of the ad.  Thanks to Bastian for filling me in and clarifying the message.

Everyone makes mistakes, right?

ModBlog reader Brendan sent me this link of a news story NBC posted recently.  It seems that a plastic surgeon has invented a “new surgery” that can reverse the process of stretched ears.

When Daniel Bocchino was 16, he started stretching his ear lobes, expanding them until he had an inch-wide hole in each lobe. But by the time he was 19, he was so over the piercing trend known as ear gauging.  He removed the thick plugs from his lobes and slathered the holes with all kinds of weird ointments and creams, hoping the stretched-out skin would just shrink back up. But that’s not how it works — once that hole is stretched any wider than 6 millimeters, there’s no going back.

Glatt, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Morristown, N.J., says he’s seeing more people — mostly young people, and mostly men — who started gauging their ears as teenagers and are now joining the military, seeking a professional job or, like Bocchino, are simply over the fad, and are trying to figure out how to fill that hole back up.  The surgery takes about half an hour per ear, and costs anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000, which Bocchino paid for himself with the money he makes as a tattoo artist. He says he’s happy about the results — the worst part of it all was probably telling his parents he regretted gauging his ears in the first place.

So it seems the good doctor, and the reporters at NBC have found a way to save all of the people with stretched lobes from the future embarrassment of facing the world when this silly fad is over.

Excuse me while I slam the palm of my hand into my forehead.

Color me shocked that a news outlet wouldn’t do research into a story before going to print with it.  Aside from the obviously degrading language being used towards those with stretched lobes, there’s also the fact that the article is claiming that this doctor is the first person to figure out how to “fix” the lobes, and charges quite a bit for the reconstruction.  It’s ok NBC.  Everyone makes mistakes.

For those of you who don’t feel that your choice of modifications is part of a fad, then kindly enjoy this image of a woman who is obviously upset with her lobes and is regretting ever having stretched them.  You can see the sadness in her eyes that tell the story of how the only job she can get because of her lobes is that of a cutlery rack.

forks

Seriously.  That’s the saddest face I’ve ever seen.  There’s no way I could make a mistake about that.  Could I?
