April sends us this little cartoon tattoo by John Brehm while he was guest spotting at 717 Tattoo in Harrisburg, PA. I’m not sure what the story is behind the tattoo other than it’s “to go with Tot.”. I can only assume that’s the little fellow below the Moon Dawg tattoo. That Tot’s linework looks so solid it’s hard to believe it’s not a stick on.

I mentioned last week that I was working on a video interview series. We’ve filmed 6 video interviews so far and those are sitting on the video editing box as we speak. This is a quick snapshot that I took from my camera on my laptop. Our first interview is with Trevor McStay. He flew all the way from Australia to tattoo me and get interviewed. We then followed him up to the San Jose Tattoo Convention where we were lucky enough to get to do interviews with Bugs, Henning Jørgensen, Mike Rubendall, Jeff Croci and other amazing tattooers. I look forward to posting these video interviews and if you’ve got other amazing artists you’d like to see interviewed, please post their names in the comments section.
I was first hired by BME in early 2005 and spent the better part of the year living with the team in La Paz, Mexico. Before moving there, I had never been on a plane, nor had I ever had the chance to write professionally. I got the job largely on the strength of this interview with Keith Alexander, who became an immediate inspiration and mentor. At the time, I could have never imagined I would also write a memorial to him eight months later.
Being involved with BME has changed my life in many fundamental ways, and the experiences I’ve had and the friendships I’ve gained make it difficult to announce that this will be my last post as a BME staff member. No hard feelings and no drama whatsoever—just a trip that’s run its course. We had a lot of good times, some tumultuous periods, and one hero who started calling him- or herself “anti-ginsberg,” which, hey—if nothing else, some of you folks have helped me develop a thick skin I never thought I’d grow, and whether you appreciate it or not, that’s worthy of some kind of thanks.
My eternal thanks, gratitude and friendship go out to Phil Barbosa, who has been as exemplary a friend and colleague as I could have ever asked for, to say nothing of the joy it’s been to work with Rachel, Jen, Roo, Mike, Jon, Jason and anyone else who’s been part of the team.
But this is it. I know there are plans for the site and the community, and I look very forward to seeing where this is all taken. Hopefully, I did my part to help make things not suck for at least a little while. And hey, for old time’s sake, here are some things you may have missed:

Hoo boy that’s grisly, but fitting for this, the Halloween season, no? The tongue is a nice touch, too—the tongue in the tattoo, that is, not the split tongue, although we’re sure that has a nice touch too…ladies.

Dabe sends us one of the coolest video submissions I’ve seen in a long time. As we’re gearing up to release the new video galleries on BME, I thought this would be a great addition to show what kind of creativity can be used in video submissions for the site. I’ll let Dabe fill you in on all the details:

So with the help of Tony Touch, I am getting an awesome Nerd sleeve worked on whenever I go visit Toledo. We decided to roll with an evolution of cameras at first, then more nerdy references above.
Tony got the idea from another artist to do a stop-motion video where it looks like the tattoo does itself. I brought in a single alienbee and softbox, plus my handy new remote, and we got to it.
Hopefully we’ll do this for the entire arm. I’d love to have that kind of record of progress on this 🙂
Since everyone is asking, some things about the tattoo:
-The actual time of the sitting was 4 hours
-This video is comprised out of 1054 shots
-”ROZWÓJ” is Polish for “development”
-The numbers on the film canister reflect the date I took my first serious photograph

Tonight is a killer book release at CanvasLA from 8pm-11pm. It features the amazing artwork of Ichibay and Pint as well as live drawing by both artists. There are limited books available at the event, though we’re hoping to be able to get a couple copies for BME shop. So don’t miss out on this if you’re here in the Los Angeles area tonight.
I posted about Paul Booth’s upcoming Halloween event for the east coaster readers and I wanted to give the west coast a little love as well. If you’re in the San Jose area, don’t forget to check out the San Jose Tattoo Convention which is put on by State of Grace. Check out their internationally renowned attending artists lists and GO if you love anything about the art of tattooing and can make it out! It’s well worth it! Taki puts on an amazing show that focuses on the art of tattooing at his conventions without distractions of bands, MMA or BMX etc that other promoters add to their shows.
I wish I could make it up but I’ll be out in Las Vegas defending BME against the lawsuit that was filed AGAINST BME (not the other way around) after the plaintiff was found guilty of cybersquatting by a three-member panel, including an arbitrator that he hand-picked. He filed suit against us (not vice versa) and keeps trying to get us to pay him almost $100,000 for the domain. If anyone wants to have a Vegas meet up this week, I’ll be there from Monday till Wednesday!

I was sitting here, reading through comments mostly from people wishing that my illness would kill me, instead of nice thoughts and well wishes from people who would understand that a severe disabling illness is hard to come to grips with. I found this tattoo and at first I thought it said “Stay Classy” which would have been way too perfect considering the circumstances. So thank you to radical kiba for the almost perfectly timed inner lip tattoo. This sweet tattoo was done by Bobby from Crazy Monkey Tattoo in Brooklyn, NY. I definitely think I know what my next tattoo will be.

I took the post from my IAM page and I’ve made some changes to it so it would be relevant to post here so that more people could see it. As an update, I’m experiencing fairly heavy side effects from them but I’m hoping that the good outweighs the bad. Most people assume that since we’re heavily modified that it’s easy to give ourselves shots. The other thing that I am interested in finding out is if my injection site reactions will differ in the 6 areas that I have to inject myself that are tattooed. Does anyone else have experience with interferon injections and tattoos? I know that my healing abilities are nonexistant so I have slowed my tattooing down to once every 3-4 months because it usually takes about that long for new tattoo work to properly heal as well as I don’t want trigger my body into having a relapse. Please let me know your experiences with injection therapies (MS related or not). I’d appreciate hearing from you!
“I made this video just few weeks ago to help explain the process of giving myself an interferon injection. I did the prep and injection part in under approximately 3 minutes, while talking through it. This is only the third injection I had taken and the FIRST ONE that I’ve done myself.
I have been diagnosed with MS since the summer of 2007. I first noticed paralysis in my right side during an endurance race when I used to drive race cars pro-am. It spiraled from there into what doctors think was my second major relapse. The first was when I lived in Mexico about 2 years prior and went misdiagnosed as a brain infection.
I have then suffered about 5-6 relapses a year lasting around 3-6 weeks each time. They ranged from partial paralysis to blurry vision to electric shock feelings when I moved my head, as well as a constant pins and needles sensation in my skin. The symptoms in each relapse don’t tend to go away with my type of MS. They just keep hopping on the pile though sometimes they lighten up.
I have been in a state of denial until recently when I lost my vision for 2 months. I had gone from a fully independent woman to needing someone to help me do household chores, drive places, pick my daughter up from the bus stop and all sorts of things one would think a 29 year old should be able to do.
As I say in the video, my doctor said by this time next year I will be severely handicapped at the rate I’m going. After some time waiting I was finally sent my prescriptions and again it sat around in the house for a couple weeks before I mustered up the courage to ask my husband to do the injections. We watched the DVD that came with my kit. We both heckled and mocked the people in the videos because they don’t seem real. They didn’t have a sense of fear or worry or dread, which is why they just didn’t seem real to me. They’re probably very experienced with the treatment, but I’m not.
I decided to make this clip, hoping that maybe someone who was recently diagnosed would see it and it would help them to start their treatment immediately instead of being like me and allowing more and more lesions to form across their brain and spinal cord.
I don’t want to go blind. I don’t want to be in a wheel chair. I don’t want to lose my independence. I don’t want that for you either and I hope that this helps in some way.
